Under direction to supervise, train, and assist dispatch personnel on an assigned shift; to act as lead worker in the facility; and to perform related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This position is the experienced dispatcher having the responsibility for assisting in the training and supervising of the communications function in the Sheriff's Department.
- Directs, supervises, and trains shift personnel as assigned.
- Implements training procedures as required.
- Assists in identifying training needs.
- Monitors, receives and dispatches all emergency (911) radio communications to and from Sheriff's patrol units, general law enforcement and public safety agencies.
- Receives emergency and complaint calls, obtaining all necessary information for proper response.
- Dispatches required departmental/agency equipment; transmit law enforcement or emergency information and needs assessment to county responders per departmental policy.
- Operates telecommunications networks in the sending and receiving of information regarding stolen property, wanted persons or other law enforcement matters.
- Runs law enforcement communications equipment, including NCIC computer, assigns case numbers and maintains daily logs.
- Maintains various files; checks files for required information.
- Appears in court as witness for departmental actions related to dispatch/responder matters.
- Maintains records for emergency disaster plans, updating manuals and OES policy references as required.
- Answers non-emergency business lines for Sheriff's Office; types, sorts and files a variety of materials.
- Prepares reports/departmental logs; operates computer equipment, typewriters and other office machines. Serves as a lead worker for assigned shift.
- Participates in maintenance of dispatch training and procedures manual; assists in the prioritizing and assigning of work, scheduling of employee work shifts, overtime, vacation, sick leave coverage, arranges call-ins to cover for absent employees, reviews time cards as needed.
- Monitors, tests and operates dispatch center equipment to ensure reliability, and notifies supervisor of need for equipment maintenance, makes technical decisions for the dispatch center such as need for supervisory or management involvement, balancing of activities; refers disciplinary problems to the supervisor.
Knowledge of:
Dispatching center procedures, policies and manuals. Terminology of telephone communications. Operation of communication equipment including telephone, radio, telecommunications and related systems. Operation of Law enforcement computer system terminals, county and city road systems, geography and areas of residential and commercial development; functions and authorities of local and regional public safety and emergency response organizations.
Ability to:
Demonstrate an aptitude for supervising and training Dispatch personnel assigned to shift; analyze situation accurately and adopt an effective course of actions; understand and apply operational policies as appropriate; enforce procedures and rules; handle general day-to-day operational demands.
Skill to:
Supervise and train Dispatch personnel assigned to particular shift; understand and carry out oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; identify, implement and coordinate training practices per departmental policy.

Equivalent to graduation from high school plus two years of experience performing public safety dispatching work at a level equivalent to Dispatcher Clerk with CalaverasCounty.
Possession of Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Dispatcher Certification for P.O.S.T. and possession of a valid California driver's license. Incumbents must possess a valid advanced First Aid Card and C.P.R. Successful completion of P.O.S.T. Communications Training Officer Course.
