This is the first of two levels in the Equipment Operations- Heavy series. 
 
Incumbents operate and maintain vehicles and equipment which may require a Commercial Driver's License or other specialized operator's license such as Herbicide or Pesticide Applicators license to operate.   Responsibilities may include driving vehicles or equipment listed below; inspecting vehicles for safety issues; performing routine vehicle maintenance; loading and unloading materials; and performing related manual labor.

  • Operates heavy, specialized equipment, which may include gradalls, bucket trucks, low boys, and/or other related equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains, and performs basic repairs to equipment.
  • Performs a variety of duties requiring manual labor including loading and unloading shipments, flagging traffic, assembling structures, picking up debris, and/or other related duties.
  • May drive and operate a commercial truck, maintenance equipment, and/or other motorized vehicle for the purpose of transporting shipments, performing grounds maintenance, and/or related duties.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Responsible for directing the work zone or other traffic control setup on job sites in accordance with MUTCD or other generally accepted standards. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma (G.E.D.) and one year of proficiency in the use and operation of qualifying equipment designated by the department; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must hold recognized training certification and be able to safely operate one or more pieces of qualifying equipment.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS 
  • Valid Driver's License as per State law or requirement.
  • Public Works or other recognized Training Certification on Qualifying Equipment.
  • Commercial Driver's License (Class/Endorsements to be designated by Equipment assignment).

  • Conducting vehicle inspections and recognizing defects;
  • Performing manual labor;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

  • Positions in this class typically require   climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. 
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects. 
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, travel, and environmental hazards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and risk of electrical shock. 
  • The employee may be frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, depending on the type of equipment assigned.  
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

UNIFORM 
An employee in this position will be supplied with a uniform, provided by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury.  The employee is responsible for abiding by the Police Jury's Uniform Agreement.
