Position Summary

Provide support to the Director of Library Services, respective campus’ Head Librarian, library staff and students. This position is not eligible for tenure.

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and must submit a complete application packet to be considered. Acomplete application consists of the following:

  • Copy of college transcripts (Transcript of college work verifying degree requirement; must include degree awarded and date confirmed. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted before the deadline, but official transcripts must be received if employed.)
Application materials must provide documentation that the applicant meets all minimum qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide personal assistance to library users in answering reference questions and determining research strategies.
  • Assist users in accessing and searching print and electronic resources.
  • Assist users in accessing MyCalhoun, STARS, and Blackboard.
  • Market and promote usage of electronic resources to faculty and students.
  • Teach library instruction/information literacy skills to classes and groups, including English 101.
  • Partner with faculty to develop ways to integrate electronic information offered by the AVL into teaching and learning.
  • Search and export OCLC MARC bibliographic records using Cat Express.
  • Import MARC records from Cat Express into Horizon.
  • Edit MARC records, checking each with the book in hand; follow AACR2 Standards.
  • Add contents notes to both MARC records for new books and older books where this field (505) is missing.
  • Upgrade MARC records for older books, adding fixed fields, subfield delimiters, subject headings, bibliographical references/index notes, contents notes, etc.
  • Attend annual meeting with full time librarians.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from an accredited institution is required.
  • Working knowledge of the Alabama Virtual Libraryis required.
  • Working knowledge of an integrated online library systemis required.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate through their experiences and accomplishments:

  • Knowledge of the Alabama Virtual Library databases.
  • Working knowledge of traditional and electronic services and resources.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and prepare accurate paperwork.

  • Ability to maintain confidential information.

  • Ability to work flexibly and creatively, including the flexibility of swapping evenings with the other Adjunct Reference Librarian if necessary.
