Environmental Public Health - Food Supervisor

Under the general direction of the Environmental Public Health Director, directs and coordinates assigned Environmental Health programs, including supervising staff, and developing and implementing policies and procedures. Shall assist with budget and QA/QI/QC of the food program. May conduct and assist staff in food service establishment inspections, complaint investigation, water sample collection, permit issuance, Calhoun County Sanitation Code and Food Code enforcement, along with other state and federal rules and regulation enforcement.
  • Supervisory responsibility for planning, training, reviewing, and approving the work of assigned staff.
  • In conjunction with the Director, develop and manage program budgets in collaboration with finance and program lead staff.
  • Develop, coordinate, implement, lead, and evaluate the continuous quality improvement/assurance/control activities within assigned programs.
  • Teach Certified Food Safety Manager classes and educate the public on topics such as food safety and proper food handling techniques.
  • Participate and lead state accreditation audit and EPH contribution in the PHAB accreditation process.
  • Lead Standardized Trainer for the food program.
  • Support community relations through representation on various health and community committees, boards, workgroups, organizations, and other local or state  agencies.
General Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct required inspections, evaluations, plan reviews, and issue permits as determined by state law or local regulation.
  • Investigate food service complaints.
  • Stay current on specialized food trends and processes.
  • Attend Environmental Health trainings and general staff meetings.
  • Participation in emergency exercises and training required.
  • Participate in the implementation, training, and use of Environmental Health Software.
  • Gather data and prepare cases for administrative or legal action.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge normally acquired through the completion of a master’s degree in public administration, public health, or other relevant area of study. Any combination of education and experience may be considered. Must be a Registered Sanitarian.
  • Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, database, and Environmental Health software systems.
  • Supervisory skills to effectively manage daily operation and administration of assigned function.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Periodically required to handle pressures related to meeting deadlines and fulfilling scheduling requirements and workloads.
  • A valid Michigan’s driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and a personal vehicle including proof of insurance are required.
Working Conditions
  • Extended workdays (beyond 8hrs/day) and weekends or holidays are occasionally required.
  • Exposure to interior and/or exterior hot or cold conditions with potential exposure to loud noises, fire, chemicals, toxins, pathogens, and/or infectious disease.
  • Working around construction sites, open trenches, and animals.
  • Ability to lift items weighing a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Periodically required to stoop, bend, kneel, or walk across uneven terrain to accommodate different working positions.
  • Travel between county locations. Occasional out-of-county or out-of-state travel for specific reasons.
  • On-call availability to respond to emergencies (e.g., program-related and public health emergencies).

Salary : $76,795 - $98,108
