What are the responsibilities and job description for the Planning and Zoning Coordinator position at Calhoun County of Michigan?
Under the direction of the Community Development Director, performs technical planning, zoning and land use duties for the County and communities within the County. Manages and coordinates planning and zoning projects and works closely with other agencies.

- Provides technical and professional planning and zoning assistance to the county and other communities within Calhoun County.
- Serves as staff support to the County Planning Commission; including agenda development, review and recommendation of submitted action items, and post meeting follow-up.
- Reviews applications for zoning permits and advises communities on approval, advises the public on design and compliance issues, meets with citizens to review codes and regulations.
- Prepares staff reports and recommendations, such as special use permits and zoning variances for communities under contract.
- Prepares public notices, charts and tables for planning and zoning related tasks.
- Provides planning and zoning expertise to other local governing and planning boards and citizen working groups when necessary; makes presentations to groups; supports community events.
- Conducts specialized research, gathers and analyzes relevant data for projects.
- Attends public meeting, facilitates input, provides technical guidance.
- Performs routine office tasks, including data entry, file management, copying and scanning, and email and phone correspondence. Develops and maintains hard copy files and records of action.
- Communicates in a manner that fosters good customer service. This position works closely with the general public and must exercise appropriate firmness, tact, and courtesy in carrying out duties.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or closely related field or combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of this role.
- Two more years of experience working in the field with a solid understanding of planning, zoning principles and practices.
- Knowledge of zoning laws, land use regulations, and urban planning principles.
- Oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills including public speaking.
- Proficient computer skills necessary to effectively utilize spreadsheets, databases, word processing, computerized accounting software and create presentations.
- Experience with grant writing/grants management is preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with various levels of County personnel, vendors, elected officials, and the general public.
- The ability to multi-task and effectively manage various projects simultaneously.
- Possess a valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies with a commitment to equity and inclusion.

- Extended work days (beyond eight hours/day) and irregular work hours are occasionally required.
- Frequent travel to meetings is required.
