Assistant and Associate Health Physicist

The California Department of Public Health seeks highly skilled professionals to join the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management.

Role Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Health Physicist to represent the Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) and contribute to ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials by applying radiation control regulations and policies.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, review, and analyze complex information notices, policies, procedures, and regulations related to radioactive materials.
• Work on projects involving sensitive rules and notices about handling radioactive materials, ensuring compliance with California laws, federal guidelines, and departmental policies.
• Participate in trainings, including didactic technical training through Nuclear Regulatory Commission-sponsored courses.
• Assist with on-site facility inspections and assessments.

Duties

1. Licensing of radioactive materials, including financial surety for decommissioning projects.
2. Engineering and safety evaluations of sealed sources and devices containing radioactive sources.
3. Complex health physics work, including developing policies, procedures, and regulations.

Requirements

• Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or equivalent experience.
• 4 years of professional operational health physics experience exercising independent judgement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in establishing and evaluating radiation protection programs.
• Knowledge of experimental or measurement programs designed to answer questions related to radiation protection.
• Analysis and solution of radiation protection problems.

Work Environment

This position requires occasional travel and will involve working in a hybrid remote setting in Sacramento, CA 95814.
