The California Department of Public Health is currently hiring for an Assistant and Associate Health Physicist. The ideal candidate will represent our Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) and play a vital role in ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials by applying radiation control regulations and policies.
The role involves utilizing specialized health physics knowledge to develop policies, procedures, regulations, information technology integration, and technical and non-technical training. Duties include licensing of radioactive materials, decommissioning projects, conducting engineering and safety evaluations, and performing other complex health physics work.
This position requires occasional travel for on-site facility inspections and assessments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develops, reviews, and analyzes complex information notices, policies, procedures, and regulations related to radioactive materials.
- Works on projects involving sensitive rules and notices about handling radioactive materials.
- Evaluates compliance with California laws, federal guidelines, and departmental policies.
Under the direction of the Senior HP, the ideal candidate participates in didactic technical training through Nuclear Regulatory Commission-sponsored courses.
Ongoing professional development is essential for success in this role.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Certification by the American Board of Health Physics or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience in establishing and evaluating radiation protection programs.
- Experience in designing and evaluating radiation protection aspects for facilities.
- Knowledge of experimental or measurement programs designed to answer questions related to radiation protection.
