The Disaster Planning Unit (DPU) is where innovation meets preparedness. You'll be instrumental in developing and maintaining statewide plans and guidance that empower our communities to face any crisis. From crafting specialized programs for catastrophic incidents to ensuring the seamless continuity of government and operations, you'll be at the forefront of strategic planning. You'll drive the development and implementation of critical California Emergency Support Functions (CA-ESF) planning and coordination efforts.
Forge powerful partnerships with Cal OES branches, federal, state, tribal, and local agencies, and a wide array of emergency response and recovery stakeholders. Your work will directly impact State and departmental goals, shaping the future of emergency response and preparedness. You'll be a key player in developing and refining the state's planning guidance, ensuring California's readiness for any event.
Be prepared to answer the call! In the event of a large-scale emergency, you may be deployed to the State Operations Center, Local Assistance Centers, or other vital locations. Working Conditions
DMV Pull Program - Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver’s License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Ensure you provide your DL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.
Hybrid Telework - This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule which includes up to one day of remote work per week. Additional in-office days may be required based on the business needs. The Main Office is located in Mather, CA.
Conflict of Interest - This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code and is required to complete Form 700 within 30 days of appointment. Failure to comply with the Conflict of Interest Code requirements may void the appointment.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is an emergency response, homeland security, and disaster recovery agency and as a result, is a dynamic and exciting place to work in a team-oriented environment. Cal OES provides training to enhance the understanding of emergency and incident management to all employees.
The Planning, Preparedness, and Prevention Directorate develops and maintains statewide plans and planning guidance for local emergency management, state agencies, and tribal governments, including specialized programs for radiological preparedness, dam safety, seismic hazards, and earthquake early warning. This directorate also includes the California Specialized Training Institute which provides exercise support and courses in emergency management, hazardous materials response, criminal justice/officer safety, fire & rescue, and crisis communications.
In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted and requested to report to work in the event of an emergency. This contact may be outside of your normal working hours (evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays). This service may require irregular work hours, work locations other than the official duty location, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and you may be required to relocate to emergency sites.
