Job Summary
The Beckman Institute Biological Imaging Facility (BIF) is seeking a Microscopy Technician. The BIF is the only core facility on the Caltech campus specializing in light microscopy. The BIF has ten microscopes; seven are confocal microscopes, the eighth is a wide field deconvolution microscope, and the last two are Light Sheet Fluorescence microscopes. Most are Zeiss instruments. In addition to microscopes, the BIF also provides software resources for processing the data collected by researchers at Caltech.
Essential Job Duties
- Assist the Director with application support as well as maintenance, calibration, and repair of the instruments and / or computers in the BIF. Among the more advanced applications the technician will help with are time-lapse imaging, imaging with non-descanned detectors, two photo confocal microscopy, deconvolution, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, super-resolution microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM), and spectral unmixing.
- Train new users on the instruments and computer software and collaborate on research projects.
- Place orders through the Caltech purchasing system (Techmart) of instruments, their components, services, and supplies.
- Act as the facility Safety Officer and assist the Director with all compliance and institute regulations such as Biosafety, chemical safety, and fire safety.
