Job summary: The teacher shall prayerfully help students learn attitudes, skills, and subject matter that will contribute to their development as mature, able, and responsible Christians to the praise and glory of God.

Required Professional Qualities

It is expected that the preschool teacher will …

  • Hold an AA degree in early childhood education or child development from an accredited postsecondary institution or be willing to participate in a program to complete such a degree within a specified time period.
  • Meet state requirements for an early education teacher position.
  • Hold ACSI early education certification or be willing to participate in a program to complete the

        requirements for certification within a specified time period.

  • Have completed the ACSI Principles and Practices of Christian Early Education course requirements within the first year of employment.

Spiritual Leadership

  • Provide an age-appropriate, personal introduction to God and Jesus so that the Holy Spirit can draw the children into relationship with Christ.
  • Introduce children to concepts of the love God has for them, His creation of them, and the high value He places on them.
  • Ensure that the classroom work environment is Christian-based, nurturing, wholesome, and loving.
  • Work with the administration and staff to address the spiritual formation needs of the children in the early education program.


Academic Leadership

  • Have knowledge of the program’s curriculum, standards, and mission, and can meet the expectations of them.
  • Teach assigned classes following the prescribed scope and sequence as scheduled by the

        administration and the early education director.

  • Integrate biblical principles and the Christian worldview throughout the early education curriculum and activities.
  • Seek to address the cognitive, spiritual, physical, emotional, and social needs of the individual child in a group environment.
  • Assist children in their development of communication skills, and serve as an appropriate language model.
  • Use classroom management techniques that build children’s ability to make choices and be self-directed.
  • Ensure that her or his school classroom reflects a professional and Christian environment.
  • Have knowledge of the physical and emotional development of preschool children, and understand the unique developmental strands common among the ages served.
  • Develop lesson plans that reflect the program’s curriculum and Christian values and standards.
  • Develop lesson plans that as much as possible meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the children and that challenge each to do her or his best work.
  • Promote children’s exploration of situations and materials by asking questions and by providing appropriate materials and guidance.
  • Employ a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials that will provide for creative teaching to reach the whole child—spiritual, cognitive, physical, social, and emotional.
  • Plan and implement a wide variety of activities that are balanced in their scope and are relevant to the lives of young children.
  • Plan through approved channels the use of field trips, guest speakers, and other media for a

        balanced classroom.

  • Regularly observe the development of children, and provide progress reports as required.
  • Respond in a timely manner to parent requests for help or information.
  • Participate in formal and informal parent-teacher conferences.
  • Participate in continuous professional development through professional reading, college course work, in-services, workshops, and conferences.
  • Give input to the early education director on teacher assistant evaluations.


Professional Leadership

  • Participate in accomplishing the goals and objectives assigned by the school administration and school policy.
  • Understand the necessity of closely supervising children and leading them in a positive manner.
  • Provide a good learning environment by keeping proper discipline in the classroom and other areas of the campus. Confront children in situations that pose a danger to other children.
  • Meet regularly with the rest of the staff to ensure coordination of programs and prompt problem resolution.
  • Prepare for substitute teachers in the event of absence, and assist them with written instructions to successfully carry out their responsibilities.
  • Participate in beginning-of-year staff orientation, staff devotionals, staff meetings, and parent/teacher fellowship meetings.
  • Respect professional ethics that require confidentiality concerning the sharing of information about children, parents, or staff.
  • Maintain regular and accurate attendance and observation records to meet the demands for a

        comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.

  • Keep parents and the director adequately informed of student progress and of any concerns that might lead to screening or a referral.
  • Know the procedures for dealing with emergency situations in the classroom and program. Conduct required emergency safety drills in coordination with program leadership.
  • Report to the appropriate individuals any campus safety, health, and maintenance needs that are observed.
  • Inform the administration in a timely manner if unable to fulfill any assigned duty.
  • Deal directly and frankly with the program administration in an earnest effort to resolve differences of opinion when they exist.

  • Represent the early childhood profession positively in the community through effectively communicating the early education program’s mission and its value for children.
  • Participate in the school’s development programs and activities in areas of constituency relations, fund-raising, and student recruitment and retention.
  • Ensure that provision is made for the accountability and securing of all funds collected in the classroom.
  • If applicable, support the broader school program by attending extracurricular activities when possible.
  • Involve parents in prayer and volunteerism as appropriate.
  • Maintain a clean, attractive, and well-ordered classroom. Share in the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff.
  • Participate in the end-of-year school closing process, such as the inventorying of materials,

        manipulatives, furniture, and equipment.

  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the director.
