POSITION:  Supervisor of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics 

 

LOCATION:  Brooks Administration Building (BOE)

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Supervises and provides leadership in the development and implementation of the prekindergarten through grade 12 Health and Physical Education program.  Observes, evaluates and collaborates with school-based administrators in the evaluation of teachers and athletic and activities directors.  Acts as a resource for teachers in addressing the needs of all learners in achieving academic progress and success. Develops, creates and curates curriculum that is aligned to content standards, incorporates best instructional and assessment practices that support strong Tier 1 universal instruction.  Collaboratively develops and implements appropriate professional learning that supports the implementation of the curriculum as intended and instruction that is culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable.  Collaborates with all general and special education instructional directors, supervisors, coordinators, and specialists to implement the Health and Physical Education program in alignment with the Blueprint for Maryland’s Schools Implementation Plan and the Calvert County Public Schools Strategic Plan. Leads the Calvert County Athletics Department in education-based sport and provides oversight and guidance to athletic/activities directors, coaches and athletic trainers.  Attends conference and state meetings, regional and state competitions, and serves as the CCPS representative to the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) and Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) as well as on various state committees. 

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of System and Instructional Performance

 

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for: 

  1. Holds or is immediately eligible for a Maryland Administrator I endorsement.
  2. Holds a Master’s Degree with coursework in Curriculum and Instruction. 
  3. Holds a Maryland Teaching Certificate in Physical Education or Health, PreK-12 or attained within one year.
  4. Five (5) years of successful teaching and coaching is required.
  5. Successful teaching as a Health or Physical Education teacher pre
  6. Experience as an athletic administrator preferred.
  7. Certification as an Athletic Administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association preferred or attained within one year.  

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.  At the time of employment, the candidate must have:

  1. Knowledge of the Maryland Physical Education framework, Maryland Comprehensive Health Education framework, PK-12 Health and Physical Education curriculum, curriculum design and development, and assessment design.
  2. Knowledge of best practices for developing curricular materials that support the?diverse learning needs of students.
  3. Evidence of broad reading in professional literature related to Health and Physical Education, literacy, instructional strategies, assessments, and adult learning styles.
  4. Knowledge of sound instructional practices that increase student learning experience, such as culturally responsive instruction, Universal Design for Learning, and Inclusive Practices.
  5. Knowledge of instructional technology that enhances student learning, including Schoology, and knowledge of classroom use of instructional technology for student achievement.
  6. Knowledge of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.
  7. A deep understanding of Danielson’s Framework for Teaching.
  8. Understanding and ability to maintain rapport with people from all identities, cultures, and backgrounds.
  9. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of equity including the ability to advocate for marginalized students.
  10. Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable, culturally responsive practices in all facets of education and understands the impact on instruction and school/district climate.
  11. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations including students, teachers, staff, central office personnel including supervisors, specialists and coordinators, parents and community partners both orally and in written form.
  12. Demonstrated ability to manage teams effectively and work collaboratively with multiple stakeholder groups.
  13. Demonstrated ability to provide professional learning that supports student achievement and that meets the needs of adult learners.
  14. Demonstrated ability to motivate others to sustain and meet program, school, and district goals and objectives.
  15. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and follow-through to effectively meet deadlines.
  16. Respond effectively under stressful circumstances.
  17. Knowledge of state, conference and county athletic regulations and ability to ensure compliance with these guidelines.
  18. Demonstrated ability to promote equity across sports programs, with a focus on providing diverse opportunities for students of all abilities and backgrounds.
  19. Demonstrated leadership abilities to coach and support athletic staff, including organizing professional learning for coaches and fostering positive relationships with school leaders and the community.
  20. Understanding of and ability to navigate the district as a system’s leader.
  21. Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks such as those responsibilities listed below.
  22. Possess a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle insurance.
  23. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:

  1. Provides leadership to Health and Physical Education teachers, in curriculum, assessment, instruction and professional learning and to coaches and activities directors on education based athletics including rules, regulations, policies and laws. 
  2. Develops curriculum, instructional resources, and assessments aligned to the Maryland Comprehensive Frameworks for Health and Physical Education and maintains material on the CCPS curriculum management system and the CCPS website.
  3. Prepares recommendations for the Director of System and Instructional Performance regarding the?implementation of the Health and Physical Education program.
  4. Coordinates vertical articulation of the Health and Physical Education program leading to the development of students that are health literate and physically literate.  
  5. Coordinates CCPS curricula, assessments, and data analysis for local assessments.
  6. Coordinates text and software adoption consistent with age appropriateness and effective Health and Physical Education programming and county guidelines.
  7. Plans and implements professional learning and content area workshops for elementary and secondary Health and Physical Education teachers.
  8. Observes the class performance of teachers and confers and consults with them regarding their performance, teaching ability, addressing of student needs, and their own professional development.
  9. Works with school-based administrators in the observation, rating, and evaluation of Health and Physical Education teachers and Activities Directors.
  10. Confers regularly with Department of Special Education staff to ensure appropriate achievement for all students in the area of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics
  11. Represents Calvert County at regional and state meetings regarding effective Health and Physical Education programming and athletic programming.
  12. Keeps informed of the latest trends and research in addressing student learning deficiencies and acceleration in the area of Health and Physical Education and education based athletic programs.
  13. Manages critical content for Health and Physical Education student learning objectives.
  14. Develops Health and Physical Education County Course Exams for middle and high school Health and Physical Education, manages these exams in Performance Matters, and analyzes data as needed.
  15. Prepares an annual budget for Health, Physical Education and Athletics.
  16. Assists in the screening and hiring of Health and Physical Education staff and Activities Directors.
  17. Assists in the preparation of press releases, brochures, and parent materials related to the?Health, Physical Education and Athletic programs.
  18. Co-facilitates the Wellness Committee.
  19. Coordinate the athletic program including unified sports.  
  20. Monitor compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including student eligibility, safety protocols, and equitable opportunities for all students.
  21. Collaborate with principals, activities directors, and coaches to align athletic programs with educational goals.
  22. Create and maintain the CCPS Athletic Handbook, “Let the Games Begin”.
  23. Represent CCPS at the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, Supervisor, and Board of Control meetings, and MPSSAA. 
  24. Provides leadership to athletic staff, including coaches, athletic trainers and athletic/activities directors, to include professional development opportunities.  
  25. Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned.
  26. Comes to work promptly every day.
  27. Works flexible hours as necessary.
  28. Works under stress and meets all deadlines.
  29. Coordinates and facilitates required training and professional learning opportunities for all coaches, athletic trainers and activities directors.  

OTHER JOB DUTIES: Duties listed are not intended to be all inclusive nor limit duties that might reasonably be assigned:

  1. Performs related work as required or assigned by the Director of System and Instructional Performance.
  2. Attends regional and state athletic playoff events.
  3. Is available to work flexible hours at the Director of System and Instructional Performance’s request.
  4. Is available to various student, teacher, and community groups for education-related purposes beyond the regular workday.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing, walking, and periodic lifting.

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the salary schedule for Administrators and Supervisors. If chosen for this position, the candidate is encouraged to enroll in direct deposit.  

 

EVALUATION:  Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

 

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: 2024-2025 school year
