What are the responsibilities and job description for the Biology Lab Services Manager position at Calvin University?
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following :
1. Prepare and set up scheduled lab courses each week including preparing reagents, gathering supplies and equipment. Maintain the orderliness of teaching lab facilities as much as possible.
2. Troubleshoot problems in laboratory activities as they arise and / or seek to improve laboratory exercises.
3. Source and purchase the supplies needed for the laboratory and research activities of the department, including seeking discounts, quotes, contracts, order consolidation, and advantageous shipping.
4. Maintain a database and track all chemical and supply purchases, correctly assigning the purchase costs to the correct department or individual research grants.
5. Act as a resource person to the department's students and faculty, other college personnel and students, and outside groups (camps, outreach activities, etc.) to enable them to safely accomplish their assigned or desired goals. Answer inquiries, provide safety information, lend available chemicals and / or equipment for projects and scheduled laboratory sessions. Act as the "go-to" and the "put out the fire" person.
6. Maintain chemical inventory by processing all incoming chemical purchases (bar coding of each container and assigning proper storage and "ownership" using special cloud-based database software) and removing consumed chemicals (remove bar codes and safely disposing of empty chemical containers, recording that removal in the database. Ensure that all Hazardous Waste, Regulated Medical Waste, and Biohazard Waste generated by the department are disposed of according to federal, state, and local regulations.
7. Ensure that instructors and researchers are informed of any hazards associated with their lab activities. Implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reduce risk. To the extent possible, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Provide safety training as needed for courses and summer research. Order and maintain inventory of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment (biohazard bins, sharps boxes, etc.) for laboratory activities.
8. Serve on departmental, school, and university committees as appropriate.
