About The School of The New York Times | Summer Academy   

The School of The New York Times (The School) is a highly innovative educational program, a collaboration between The New York Times and BrandEd, offering a wide range of pre-college academic experiences. Drawing on unparalleled expertise and access, The School provides seminal formative experiences that give students a broader vision and focus, while laying the foundation for their future academic and life success.   

Held in New York City, Summer Academy (SA) offers immersive, two-week terms throughout the summer. During this time, students learn, investigate, and explore while having fun, making lasting connections with peers, mentors, and instructors who share their passions and interests.   

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities   

Program Aides play a crucial role in supporting both the academic and social aspects of The School. They are responsible for providing supervision and supporting students during academic and student experiences, both on and off campus. 

Program Aides are responsible for supporting Faculty during course sessions, with an hour break for lunch, in addition to occasional evening site visits and activities. Faculty includes the Lead Instructor and the Instructor, in addition to any other specialists, guest speakers or other invitees.   

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:   

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students, both on and off campus, including during site visits, excursions, and course activities. Observe and enforce necessary precautions.
  • Accompany students on excursions throughout New York City, ensuring they have a positive and educational experience. A strong knowledge of NYC and public transportation (especially subways) is essential.
  • Recording attendance and student behavior pastorals if needed.
  • Assist with faculty-led activities as needed and perform other duties as assigned.  

 

Program Aides will be responsible for the full range of responsibilities typically associated with observing necessary precautions and ensuring students' safety and well-being both on and off-campus during site visits and course activities and enforcing program rules to ensure that all participants are safe. Program Aides take students on excursions throughout New York City, requiring a good sense of the environment and familiarity with navigating public transportation, particularly subways.

  • Enthusiasm for Working with Youth: A passion for supporting and mentoring students, especially those ages 14-18.

 

Education, Work Experience and/or Licensure   

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Previous youth development and/or program support experience (e.g., summer campsresidential programs)
  • Previous teaching, tutoring or other educational experience is desirable.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required or willingness to obtain certification at your own expense.
  • Three professional references are required. 

 

Other Requirements   

As Program Aides work closely with minors, candidates must pass a criminal background check and successfully complete all required trainings.  

   

Schedule  

Summer Academy Dates (excluding weekends):   

  • Term 1: June 9th - June 19th
  • Term 2: June 23rd – July 3rd
  • Term 3: July 7th - July 17th
  • Term 4: July 21st – July 31st

 

Hours range from 15-30 per week: Monday-Friday (week 1), Monday-Thursday (week 2).  

Please be aware that this position may require work on certain holidays, including Juneteenth (June 19th) and Fourth of July (July 4th), depending on program needs. 

 

Candidates should specify their availability for all four terms. Ideally, candidates should be available for all four terms, as well as for a training session scheduled for the week prior to the start of the terms.

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, travel up and down stairs, crouch, stoop and reach.
