Role: Sport/Activity Director
Summary:
In 2025, Camp Arrow Wood is seeking to employee seasonal Sports/Activity Directors in the following areas: basketball and football: flag and tackle. Each of these roles are a full-time, seasonal, salaried position requiring a nearly 7-week commitment (June 24-August 10, 2025).
We employ professional coaches who are passionate about their sport/activity and love working with young people – particularly athletes – ranging in age from 8 to 16. Directors should inspire and motivate their players/participants regardless of age or skill level. Campers should leave camp with an increased passion for the game/activity along with an advancement of skill, confidence, and knowledge. In addition to leading the sport/activity, our Directors work alongside Assistant Coaches/Activity Specialists and serve as mentors - offering guidance and feedback and, in many cases, teaching more junior staff how to effectively teach/coach and help children learn and improve.
While Directors have different responsibilities than the counselors and other staff, at its heart, the camp is a community and a Directors involvement in general camp activities go a long way towards building relationships with the campers and providing them with an experience that sets Camp Arrow Wood apart from other sports-centric camps.
Director Primary Responsibilities:
- Serve as the head of a designated sport/activity with responsibility for creating the summer curriculum and leading daily sport/activity-specific skill development and practice sessions.
- Supervise campers and staff in your designated sport/activity – as well as around camp and when with a group off site – to ensure their safety, general health and well-being, skill development, and enjoyment.
- Build community amongst your sports/activity group and ensure the welfare of campers and positive resolution of camper (and staff)-related issues.
- Identify and communicate equipment and facility needs to camp leadership to ensure appropriate ordering.
- Create and maintain collaborative relationships with Assistant Coaches/Activity Specialists, serving as a mentor to these individuals as necessary.
- Provide regular observation of areas where children are present to make sure counselors are providing appropriate supervision.
- Attend all meals with the camp community.
- Participate in select non-sports activities and programming, including, but not limited to, opening and closing days, The Arrow, The Arrow Wood Games, Super Saturdays, evening and rainy-day activities, trips, and electives.
- As needed, serve as Head O.D., ensuring that campers are appropriately supervised, safe, and healthy from approximately 9:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
- Complete initial assessments and written end-of-session evaluations for each individual camper spending significant time in your sport/activity.
- Support the successful execution of all camp policies and procedures, including health and safety and emergency plans.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
- College-level playing or coaching experience (former or current college football players or high school coaches preferred).
- Prior experience coaching or working with young athletes (ages 9-16) in a camp, school, or club setting.
- Strong knowledge of football fundamentals, strategy, skill development, and game play.
- Leadership experience with the ability to motivate, mentor, and develop young athletes.
- Ability to design and implement structured basketball training programs for various skill levels.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with campers, staff, and parents.
- High energy, enthusiastic, and positive attitude in a camp environment.
- Ability to manage and oversee assistant coaches and counselors.
- Strong organizational and time management skills to coordinate daily training sessions, games, and special events.
- Must be available to live on-site for the duration of the camp season.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience as a football director, head coach, or lead trainer in a youth sports program.
- Familiarity with strength and conditioning principles for youth athletes.
- Experience organizing tournaments, competitions, and team-building activities.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before camp starts).

Camp Arrow Wood is a coed sleepaway camp for those who are passionate about sports. We offer three- and six-week options emphasizing sports and athletics blended with much-loved camp traditions and activities. Current sports include baseball/softball, basketball, cross country/track, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis. Explore activities include creative arts, fitness, outdoor adventure, waterfront (boating, sailing, swimming, and waterskiing), and more. We welcome families with children from ages 8 through 16 (entering third through eleventh grade) and offer a Leaders’ Program for 17-year-old (rising high school seniors) junior staff members.
Arrow Wood incorporates the best of the century-old U.S. camping tradition but better meets the needs of today’s children and the challenges of modern society. We empower boys and girls to experience great success in their given sports and passions, while also giving them the opportunity to explore new interests of the less familiar and help them learn to become leaders.
During our third summer (2024), we had 120 campers ranging in age from nine to 16. As we are growing, we are projecting that we will increase our camper population in 2025 and have 170 campers at any one time. These increases are so that we can scale at an intentional and manageable pace and maintain the desired personal level of attention as we are growing.
