All Program Head Counselors work as a member of the CBC team to ensure that camp operations are well-organized, camper-centered, safe, and relate to the mission of camp. They will safely facilitate activities in their designated area that directly work towards the established camper goals, as well as demonstrate leadership in whole-camp activities. This person should have a strong background in the area and a creative ability to teach these skills in a safe, engaging, and fun manner. The Program Head of Woodworking designs and implements curriculum for campers ages 5-15, and teaches and supports the development of skills utilizing hand tools.


Minimum Qualifications:

  •    Experience leading and teaching activities in woodworking.
  •    Camp experience (preferred).
  •    Current First Aid and CPR certifications.
  •    Desire and ability to work with children and adults in a camp setting.
  •    Ability to be a positive role model to campers and in the public.
  •    Ability to assume leadership responsibilities as Program Head.
  •    At least 21 years of age 


Specific responsibilities include:

  • Developing program area curriculum, lesson plans, and activities for campers 
  • Instructing campers and staff in activities related to the program area.
  • Working with Program Director and other program heads to plan weekly camp-wide programs
  • Safely managing groups, including campers and staff, in activities.
  • Assisting in the establishment and implementation of policy and procedures, including, but not limited to safety,     emergency procedures, and environmental expectations and behaviors for that program area.
  • Making recommendations for equipment needed for the program area.
  • Preparing for and actively participating in staff trainings, meetings, and supervisory conferences.
  • Providing supervision for campers and developing skills to be proactive about disciplinary issues with campers.
  • Promoting camper recognition by presenting campers with awards at the end of each week.
  • Being a positive and healthy role model for campers and staff.
  • Mentoring junior counselors and CITs by setting a good example, role modeling appropriate counselor behavior, and communicating positive and constructive feedback to Coordinators or Directors to pass along to Junior Counselor/CIT.
  • Assisting campers with understanding of their social and natural environments.
  • Encouraging respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities, the environment, and each other.


Other responsibilities include:

  • Be congenial and supportive co-worker with a mind toward community building and development
  • Participating in projects around camp designed to enhance the camp environment.
  • Assisting in other areas of camp operation when needed (which could include moving camp equipment and supplies, basic maintenance, cleaning, filling in for an absent counselor, etc.)
  • Providing evaluative information to the Directors and leadership team to improve camp programs and procedures.
  • Assisting the Camp Director in adhering to the American Camp Association standards for accreditation and State of Maine guidelines for licensed summer camps.


Essential Functions:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups and provide appropriate and necessary instructions to staff and campers.
  • Cognitive ability to communicate, plan, and conduct activities to achieve camper developmental objectives.
  • Visual, auditory, and ambulatory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  • Ability to observe and assess camper behavior, ability to enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures, and ability to apply positive and proactive behavior management techniques. 




Salary : $7,500 - $8,000
