Job Title: Head of Baseball Department at Camp Cedar
Location: Camp Cedar, Casco, Maine
Dates: June 13 – July 25 (flexible)
Compensation: $750 per week, travel stipend, room and board included
Camp Enrollment: 250 boys, ages 8-15
Reports To: Camp Director, Athletic Directors
Position Overview:
Camp Cedar, a vibrant and welcoming boys' residential summer camp nestled in the beautiful woods of Maine, is looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Head of Baseball Department to lead our summer baseball program. This is a fantastic opportunity to manage a comprehensive baseball curriculum, inspire campers of all skill levels, and work within a dynamic camp community.
As Head of Baseball, you will be responsible for developing and overseeing the entire baseball program, from instructional practices to friendly games and tournaments. You will work with a small team of counselors and assistant coaches to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual growth in baseball skills, all while ensuring campers have a fun and safe summer experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Leadership & Development:
- Design and implement a baseball program that is engaging, educational, and fun for boys aged 8-15, with varying skill levels.
- Plan daily practices, skills development drills, and friendly games/tournaments.
- Ensure the baseball program promotes team building, sportsmanship, and positive competition.
- Coaching & Instruction:
- Lead baseball training sessions and provide individualized coaching to campers, helping them develop their skills in pitching, hitting, fielding, and overall game strategies.
- Adapt drills and practices for all skill levels, ensuring each camper is challenged and improving.
- Foster a positive and supportive atmosphere for campers and staff alike.
- Staff Management:
- Lead and mentor a team of baseball counselors and assistants.
- Organize staff schedules, provide training, and give regular feedback to ensure that the program runs smoothly and safely.
- Foster teamwork and create a fun, supportive environment for both staff and campers.
- Safety & Supervision:
- Ensure all activities and equipment are safe and in good condition.
- Follow and enforce Camp Cedar’s safety guidelines and risk management protocols at all times.
- Monitor camper well-being and provide individual attention to ensure they are having a great, safe experience.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with other department heads and the Camp Director to integrate baseball activities into the larger camp experience.
- Communicate regularly with parents (via Camp Cedar’s parent portal or designated communication methods) to provide updates on their child’s progress.
- Program Evaluation & Feedback:
- Regularly assess the baseball program’s effectiveness and make recommendations for improvement.
- Keep track of camper progress and provide feedback to campers and parents.
Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Coaching experience in baseball (at least 2-3 years) at the youth or higher level, with an emphasis on skill development.
- Previous camp or youth sports leadership experience is a plus.
- Experience working with children, specifically in a camp or recreational setting.
- Skills & Attributes:
- Strong communication skills, both with campers and staff.
- Ability to lead and inspire a team of coaches and counselors.
- Experience working with children of various ages and skill levels (ages 8-15).
- Patience, energy, and a passion for helping kids develop both on and off the field.
- Willingness to adapt to the camp environment and collaborate with other staff members to ensure an outstanding camper experience.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods, lead outdoor activities, and work in all weather conditions.
- Capable of lifting and moving baseball equipment as needed (e.g., bats, balls, cones).
- Certifications:
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred (or willing to obtain before the camp season).
- Background check required.
