Waterfront Director for 501c3 Nonprofit Summer Camp

As the Waterfront Director, you'll play a pivotal role in planning our summer. You won't just be assessing the skills of our staff and campers; you'll also have the chance to create exciting waterfront activities and interact directly with the campers. Lakefront activities are a cornerstone of the Camp Gregory summer camp experience, and you'll be leading the charge in crafting unforgettable experiences for our campers.

Time: 6 weeks
Reports to: Camp Director
Salary Range: $1050/week for onsite camp work
Pay Day: Friday/weekly

**Children’s Camp Schedule:**

  • Staff Training: June 29 – July 5
  • Camp Season:

Week 1: Mon, July 7 – Friday, July 11 (day camp ONLY)
Week 2: Mon, July 14 – Friday, July 18 (day camp ONLY)
Week 3: Sun, July 20 – Friday, July 25 (day and overnight camp - begins Sunday afternoon)
Week 4: Sun, July 27 – Friday, Aug 1 (day and overnight camp - begins Sunday afternoon)
Week 5: Sun, Aug 3 – Friday, Aug 8 (day and overnight camp - begins Sunday afternoon)

  • Staff Wrap-Up: Saturday, August 9

Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience)

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Possess current certification in a training course for lifeguard supervision and management as described in this link.
  • Must be a Progressive Swimming Instructor. Find additional details here.
  • Minimum of: One season of previous experience as a camp Waterfront Director at a New York State camp; or − Two seasons of previous experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or − 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a swimming pool or bathing beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time.
  • Hold an accepted and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate as listed on the Fact Sheet entitled “Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification for NYS Children’s Camps and NYS Bathing Facilities”
  • Annually review and document the review of the camp’s safety plan for swimming.

Essential Job Functions:

The Waterfront Director is responsible for overseeing all swimming activities at the camp’s pools and bathing beaches. This includes supervising lifeguards and staff, ensuring the safety plan is followed, and responding to emergencies.

If certified as a Lifeguard, the Waterfront Director may also serve as a lifeguard during swimming activities. They will implement and supervise the buddy system or other approved bather accountability systems.

Additionally, the Waterfront Director will participate in and lead camp activities as assigned, assist with counselor breaks, and complete any other duties as required by the Camp Director.

1. Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program

  • Write (with the help of life guards) lesson plans that meet camp goals
  • Evaluate aquatic abilities of campers and staff
  • Deliver creative swim and watercraft program activities
  • Determine alternate activities in the event the waterfront is closed
  • Assess Campers Swimming Ability per evaluate bather swimming ability using standards and criteria
  • Categorize campers’ ability as either a non-swimmer or swimmer. A record of each camper’s swimming evaluation including the camper’s full name, date of test and their assessed ability will be maintained at the camp.

2. Train and supervise waterfront staff

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training
  • Train waterfront and counseling staff in their waterfront responsibilities
  • Verify skills of all waterfront lifeguards
  • Supervise waterfront staff to provide a safe and high-quality program
  • Supervise the waterfront staff evaluation process
  • Implement the scheduling of waterfront staff
  • Directly supervise other aquatic staff

3. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area

  • Set up waterfront area prior to and during staff training
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
  • Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety
  • Check equipment, and make (or file for) repairs
  • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
  • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials
  • Survey waterfront area daily, and keep the area free of hazards and debris

4. Participate as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions

  • Work with Director and other key staff members to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs.
  • Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.
  • Participate in management and staff meetings.
