Cabin Counselor
Position Overview:
At AYF Camp Haiastan, The Cabin Counselor position is the surrogate parent for campers assigned to them for two-week sessions. In this position, you will work with and live directly with campers within a cabin group. Your responsibility is for their safety, well-being, and enjoyment by guiding, teaching, and mentoring the cabin group. This position qualifies as a seasonal employee under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Massachusetts labor laws. As such, seasonal employees are exempt from overtime pay requirements.
Salary:
Base rate of $400/week including room and board
$50 retention rate increase per year
Responsibilities:
- Cabin Counselors are assigned to a cabin and are responsible for up to ten campers.
- Cabin Counselors are accountable for their campers at all times
- Responsibilities include mentoring them in aspects of camp life including but not limited to: Activity participation, daily personal hygiene, dining, all-camp activities, free time, and quiet time.
- Assist campers with Armenian School, Aquatics, and Night Activities
- Cabin Counselors report directly to the Head Counselors and Summer Director.
Requirements:
- At least 18 years of age
- Attend staff training and meetings
- Previous experience as a paid or volunteer camp counselor, Staff-In-Training (SIT), youth leader, recreation leader, teacher’s assistant, and/or Camp Haiastan camper.
- Ability to motivate and engage children and manage behavioral challenges.
- Record keeping and computer skills
- Have a sense of humor! This is a fun and nurturing camp for children to learn, grow, and enjoy their safe camping experience.
- Must be physically fit and able to lift 50 pounds.
Employment Contingencies:
- Submission of Massachusetts CORI, SORI, and your local police department background checks that reveal no previous or pending criminal activity.
- Submission of all required pre-employment and post-hiring documentation, including current health status, health history, and proof of good health.
