COPE/Climbing Director Job Description
Reports to: Program Director and Camp Director
Objectives: The COPE/Climbing Director will safely overlook and operate the Camp Mountaineer Ropes and Climbing areas. The director should be a leader and role model for staff and campers.
The COPE/Climbing Director must:
- Be a mature and responsible adult, at least 21 years old.
- Hold, or be willing to obtain prior to the summer camp season, a qualifying certification from a Scouting America National Camping School and become registered as an active volunteer in the Mountaineer Area Council.
- Have the ability to identify, respond, and provide leadership to environmental and other hazards and be physically capable to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, injury).
- Live at Camp Mountaineer for the duration of the resident camp season (approximately five weeks).
Specific Responsibilities: The COPE/Climbing Director works closely with the Program Director in providing leadership to the COPE/Climbing Staff and campers – specific responsibilities are:
- Provide the training and supervision of the COPE/Climbing staff in teaching program area merit badges, COPE initiative games, high ropes activities, Zip Lining, and other camp programs.
- Adhere to the Guide to Safe Scouting requirements on climbing and high ropes safety.
- Responsible for safety of all campers and staff while they are in the COPE/Climbing areas.
- Keeps the COPE/Climbing area clean, safe, neat and well organized.
- Carry Certification from National Camp School in COPE and Climbing, training is available prior to camp. Previous Scouting experience is a plus but not necessary.
- Must be available to attend training May 2nd, attend a week-long National Camping School session and work June 14 through July 22.
- Be knowledgeable of and enforce all procedures related to health and safety, council and national policies, use of equipment, and operation of facilities.
- Interact with Scouts, leaders, and staff members to identify areas that require attention to maintain the delivery of quality programming.
- Maintain high morale of the staff, inspire trust, recognize achievement and make note of poor performance with the camp director through personal observation and staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the camp director for the successful operation of the camp.
