Job Title: Assistant Camp Director (Seasonal)
Reports to: Camp Directors
Camp Nejeda – Camp Nejeda is a unique summer camp in New Jersey dedicated to serving families with type 1 diabetes. Since 1958, it has provided a safe, supportive, and fun environment where campers can enjoy traditional camp activities while learning to manage their diabetes alongside peers who understand their challenges. Camp Nejeda’s mission is to empower people with type 1 diabetes to develop confidence, independence, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Summary: The Assistant Camp Director will support the camp's leadership team, including the Camp Directors, Unit Leaders, Activities Director, and Waterfront Director. This position will also play a crucial role in supervising counselors, implementing camp policies and procedures, responding to emergencies, and facilitating camp trips.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Support Camp Leadership: Assist the Camp Directors, Unit Leaders, Program Director, and Waterfront Director in the efficient operations of the camp. This includes aiding in daily tasks, staff supervision, and camper care.
2. Cover Time Off: Seamlessly assume the responsibilities of Camp Director, Unit Leader, Activities Director, or Waterfront Director during their scheduled time off, ensuring uninterrupted camp operations.
3. Supervise & Mentor Counselors: Provide guidance and mentorship to counselors in their daily responsibilities, camper interactions, adherence to camp policies, and the maintenance of a positive and safe environment for all. Offer support and address concerns, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
4. Implement and Enforce Camp Policies and Procedures: Ensure meticulous adherence to all camp policies and procedures as detailed in the Staff Handbook. Maintain a safe and secure camp environment in accordance with ACA and Department of Health regulations.
5. Manage Camper Behavior: Proactively escalate and address camper behavioral issues, employing appropriate disciplinary actions as outlined in the Staff Handbook, while fostering a positive and supportive camp culture.
6. Respond to Emergencies: Execute established emergency procedures in a calm and efficient manner, demonstrating leadership in situations such as lost campers, medical emergencies, severe weather events, fire, intruder alerts, and active threat scenarios.
7. Support/Facilitate Special Events: Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of special camp activities, such as theme days and camp trips, ensuring camper engagement and safety.
Qualifications:
- College Degree preferred, or equivalent experience
- Must be able to reside on camp property from June 18 – August 15, excluding designated days off.
- Able to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and contribute to an inclusive work environment while fostering a sense of belonging in all staff and campers.
- Camp Experience: Proven experience working with children in a camp setting
- Supervisory Skills: Strong leadership and management skills, including providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and ongoing support to foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Exhibit outstanding verbal and written communication skills, facilitating clear and effective communication with campers, staff, parents, and leadership team.
- Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Abilities: Demonstrate proficiency in handling challenging situations, making well-informed decisions, and implementing practical and effective solutions to address a variety of camp-related issues efficiently.
- Valid Driver's License: Possess a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
- Familiarity with diabetes management is preferred. (Training provided)
Other Responsibilities:
- Communicate with Parents: Interact with parents/guardians, providing updates on camper concerns, camp activities, and emergency situations, ensuring open communication and transparency while adhering to camp protocols and guidelines regarding parent communication
- Maintain Camp Facilities: *Actively participate in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of camp facilities, including cabins, program areas, common spaces, and ensuring prompt attention to maintenance requests to uphold a well-maintained camp environment
- Uphold the Mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation:* Demonstrate a genuine commitment to the mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation, actively contributing to the overall success of the camp in providing a positive and enriching experience for campers and staff
- Staff Training:* Help to develop and facilitate training content for the camp counselors during Staff Training Week
