The People Operations Manager is responsible for enhancing the employee experience at Canopy by leading and managing all aspects of the People Operations department. This role encompasses a wide range of duties, including recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new employees; managing employee relations; ensuring adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements; administering benefits and employee leave; overseeing compensation processes; and providing People Ops-related support to leadership.

Location : Minneapolis, MN

Hiring Salary Range : $85,000 - $100,000; Starting salary will depend on your skills and demonstrated readiness for the role.

Hours / Day : Monday-Friday, 40 hours a week - including evenings, and weekends when necessary

Job Type : Full Time, Exempt

Essential Job Functions

Leadership & Strategy :

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive people operations strategy aligned with the Canopy's goals and values.
  • Supervise the People Operations team, providing direction and setting work priorities to meet strategic and operational goals.
  • Partner with the leadership team to understand and execute the organization's talent strategy, particularly concerning current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.

Talent Development :

  • Oversee the Talent Acquisition Specialist, who manages the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring processes to meet staffing needs across all levels.
  • Support the development of new programs and workforce strategies that align with organizational growth and enhance employee retention.
  • Lead strategic talent development initiatives using data-driven insights and fostering community engagement to strengthen the organization's talent pipeline.
  • Employee Relations :

  • Oversee and conduct investigations, ensuring that all disciplinary issues and concerns are handled in a timely and effective manner.
  • Provide expertise and assistance for employee coaching, counseling, and disciplinary processes.
  • Collaborate performance management initiatives and oversee progressive discipline processes.
  • Collaborate with organizational development on employee engagement initiatives to foster a positive workplace culture.
  • Compensation & Benefits :

  • Administer all company-sponsored benefit programs such as group health, dental, and vision plans, disability, life, retirement plans, time off, COBRA and ancillary benefits.
  • Administer the 403(b) Plan and ensure that it is current, compliant and correct. Handle and resolve audit and other issues as well as respond to requests or concerns from employees.
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure quality and cost-effective services for HR functions.
  • Policy & Compliance :

  • Oversees company-wide human resources policies and procedures, including the creation, review, and maintenance of policies for other departments. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, recommending best practices to stay ahead of regulatory changes.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law, ensuring Canopy remains competitive and compliant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the People Ops department
  • Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field.
  • Master's degree or HR certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR) is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in People Operations / Human Resources, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing key HR functions such as performance management, employee relations, recruitment, and compliance.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing strategic HR initiatives, talent development programs, and workforce strategies.
  • Experience in supporting or managing progressive discipline, investigations, and conflict resolution.
  • Prior experience working in a high-growth or dynamic environment, such as a startup or nonprofit, is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and best practices, including federal, state, and local compliance (FMLA, FLSA, ADA, EEO, etc.).
  • Proficient in HR software systems (e.g., HRIS, ATS); experience using data to drive HR decisions and initiatives.
  • Physical Requirements

    This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copy machines and filing cabinets. This role must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

  • Canopy Mental Health & Consulting (MHC) provides high-quality outpatient psychotherapy and psychiatric services with purpose and integrity. We provide culturally affirming therapy services for historically underserved and marginalized communities in Minnesota. Our services are available in-person in Minneapolis and Richfield and via telehealth statewide.
  • Canopy Roots is an innovative mental health organization offering culturally affirming unarmed first responder services to people in crisis via 911 in the city of Minneapolis. We promote safety for people in crisis by providing emotional de-escalation strategies, crisis intervention support, and connection to appropriate resources. Crisis Responders are members of the communities they serve, reflecting the wide range of cultural and racial identities and experiences of the people who need our services the most.
