WIC Nutrition Education Specialist Job Description

This position is primarily responsible for enrolling persons applying for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Provides eligibility screening for WIC, nutrition and breastfeeding assessment, nutrition education, monitoring of the nutrition care plan, breastfeeding support, community resources to WIC clients, and assist with special projects such as; program outreach efforts. Travel may be required as needed.
Specific job duties include:
- Conduct eligibility screens for potential WIC participants.
- Complete required documentation to support eligibility or ineligibility for the WIC program.
- Conduct nutritional assessments using patient centered skills; including height, weight, hemoglobin, dietary assessment, and medical histories.
- Correctly collect specimens, perform testing, and processes as indicated.
- Utilize critical thinking skills to determine specific nutrition counseling, lactation management and/or complications, and monitor progress. Refer high risk clients to the registered dietitian and high-risk breastfeeding dyads to the IBCLC.
- Provide appropriate patient-centered nutrition and breastfeeding education, counseling, education on WIC program information such as how to shop for WIC foods, and referrals to clients and documented appropriately in the nutrition care plan.
- Complete breastfeeding assessments before issuing breast pumps to eligible participants and provide appropriate education on breast pump use and storage of breast milk.
- Documenting information into the medical chart accurately and timely and obtaining required signatures from participants as applicable.
- Assume responsibility for routine office matters: attend to client’s questions over the phone or in person, filing, schedule appointments, maintain security of files and paperwork following HIPPA procedures, submit reports on time, finish assigned duties in a timely manner, clean and maintain laboratory to meet standards.
- Manage basic customer service complaints before it escalates to the WIC Director/RD.
- Other duties may be requested or assigned, including assisting the WIC Director/RD with other projects, including outreach efforts.
- Complete all required new employee training and observations/file reviews within 12 weeks of hire; and complete annual training requirements and observations/file reviews.
- Work collaboratively in a team environment and also able to work well independently.
- Support trauma informed practices for all staff and patients.
- Support patient centered practices for all staff and patients.
- Support cultural competency goals and commitments of Canyon Pediatrics & Family.
- Adhere to HIPPA policies and practices.
- Adhere to attendance policy.
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must have transportation
- CPR Certified or to complete CPR certification soon after hire.
Preferred Requirements
- Associates degree or higher in healthcare related field, preferably in nutrition or dietetics.
- Previous Healthcare Experience
- Previous Customer Service Experience
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Job Type: Full-time
Job Location: Canyon Pediatrics and Family Gilbert is the main location. May need to float to the Canyon Pediatrics and Family Mesa location. Work from home staggered shift rotation (After new employee training is completed).
Pay: $15.00 - $17.00 per hour (Depending on background and/or experience)
