What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horse Stable Hand position at Capall Equestrian Center?
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
- Horse handling, turning in and out, grooming, saddling, feeding, watering, and other general stable duties
- Stable duties include cleaning stalls, automatic waters, and maintaining a presentable environment in all areas of the barn
- Proper maintenance of gear, tack and other equipment
- Follow all safety procedures to maintain safety of guests, staff, horses and other farm animals
- Feed horses daily the proper amount of feed/hay as written on the horse’s stall card and/or white board in feed room. This may occasionally include administering oral medications
- Check automatic waters for each horse daily, ensuring that each horse has a clean bowl and water supply
- Clean stalls and paddocks of manure and soiled shavings daily
- Clean pastures of manure daily (weather permitting)
- Keep feed room and hay loft clean/organized and hay loft free of hay bale strings
- Report to Barn Manager when any feed/medication/supplement supply is low
- Add clean shavings to stalls and track usage as requested
- Apply fly sheets, blankets, fly masks, fly spray as needed
- Halter and lead a horse safely to turn out as scheduled
- Deposit manure in manure bin, keeping manure bin area tidy
- Report to Barn Manager when manure bin is ¾ full
- Sweep and/or blow the barn aisle daily
- Dust stall fronts weekly
- Clean wash rack area at the end of each day
- Complete all chores on daily chore check list
- Clean indoor arena of manure daily
- Assist Barn Manager with maintenance of indoor arena. Watering and dragging of footing as needed
- Administer oral medications as directed by Barn Manager/Trainer and track all medications dispensed
- Report repairs or damage in and around the barn to the Barn Manager
- Report any signs of lameness, sickness or injury of horses to the Barn Manager
- Communicate with property owners and Barn Manager effectively and responsibly
- Laundering of horse wear, sweeping/vacuuming, cobwebbing, etc. Cleaning duties include the entire barn and all related rooms (i.e. tack, restroom, mechanic room, feed room, supply room, etc.)
- Daily feeding and watering of horses. This includes, but is not limited to providing water and quality hay/grain to all horses while in the barn and during turnout, supplements as directed etc.
- Daily horse care. This includes, but is not limited to grooming, turnout, hand walking as needed, etc.
- Daily monitoring of the health and well-being of each horse and reporting any issues or concerns to the Barn Manager
- Other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/EDUCATION
- Minimum age 18
- Drivers license and reliable transportation
- Experience with horses and other farm animals required
- Ability to lift and transport weights from 10lbs – 50lbs without issue
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions
- Team Player
- Strong Communication skills
- Responsible work ethic
- Fitness and Stamina are required and important to keep up with the physical demands of the position
- High School Diploma or equivalent
