Position Description

DEFINITION:

To provide classroom instruction to student inmates at New Hanover County Correctional Center through lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Provide instruction in all 5 areas of the HiSET exam, including language arts, writing, social studies, math and science. Must be familiar with Adult Basic Education curriculum and be able to keep accurate records.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to:

Essential Functions:

• Adhere to all guidelines, rules, policies and procedures of New Hanover Correctional Center.
• Provide classroom and laboratory instruction to students.
• Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
• Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
• Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual tutoring to students outside of the classroom as needed.
• Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
• Participate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
• Maintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
• Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
• Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
• Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.

Other Important Functions:

• Fill in for other instructors as needed.
• Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various text books and select books to be used for future classes.
• Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including
• progress and qualifications for graduation or successful completion of program of study.
• Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substance such as blood borne pathogens; continually undergo training and train student in such procedures.
• Demonstrate community involvement.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge:

• Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and procedures.
• Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment.
• Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment.
• Principles and procedures of record keeping.
• Principles and techniques involved in test development and administration.
• Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Ability To:

• Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
• Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
• Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:

• making observations
• reading and writing
• communicating with others
• operating assigned equipment
• handling varied tasks simultaneously.

• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:

• standing or sitting for extended periods of time
• operating assigned equipment
• preparing and presenting instructional material.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Minimum Education/Training:

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

• One or more years of experience in an instructional setting as a tutor or teacher are preferred.
• One or more years of experience working in a correctional facility is preferred.

Work Environment:

• This position is located at a correctional facility.
• This position receives specific direction relating to correctional policies and procedures from administrative and custodial staff at the prison work site.
