Job Purpose
Cape Fear REALTORS®, located in beautiful coastal Wilmington, NC seeks a Government Affairs Director to join our team. As a large local association with over 3,600 members, this is a great opportunity to bring your passion for political affairs to the next level.
Based on issue priorities, the successful candidate will lead advocacy efforts on behalf of the association on a local level; will work directly with local lawmakers and regulators to monitor issues and educate them on association positions; and will provide strategic advocacy support to the association. Additionally, this position will engage members through policy and political outreach efforts and manage the day-to-day activities of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC). This includes developing and implementing fundraising strategies, managing investor relations, and facilitating candidate interviews.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
Lead Advocate/Strategist:
- Based on issue priorities, lead advocacy efforts on behalf of the association on a local level.
- Work directly with local lawmakers and regulators to monitor issues and educate them on association positions.
- Provide strategic advocacy support to the association.
Committee Liaison:
- Staff liaison to the Governmental Affairs Committee, RPAC Committee, and co-staff liaison to Community Relations Committee.
- Work with committee chair to set agendas, coordinate guest speakers, and facilitate all communications with the committee.
- Work with committee to identify issue priorities, action strategies, and keep minutes.
- Update committees on collaborative efforts pertaining to their goals and strategies.
- Staff liaison to the RPAC Committee and Candidate Selection Task Force (CSTF).
- Develop annual fundraising plan for reaching RPAC investment goals.
- Execute plans and ensure compliance with state and federal law.
- Work with the CSTF to identify candidates for support and funding.
BASE Liaison:
- Coordinate with BASE members and staff on issues of mutual interest including communication, messaging, and position development of those issues.
- Collaborate on political/candidate events that benefit the members.
- Support CFR appointed member liaison to BASE.
National/State Connection:
- Collaborate with NAR/NCR on federal candidates and issues.
- Collaborate with the state association on state candidates and issues.
REALTOR Party Efforts:
- Support Calls for Action, write grants including but not limited to Smart Growth, Housing Opportunity, Broker Involvement, Placemaking, and Issue Mobilization funding.
- Encourage participation and manage the Broker Involvement Program and use the Land Use Initiatives to review local ordinances.
Coalitions & Community:
- Build local relationships to assist in furthering issue priorities.
- Serve as a Liaison to Home Builders’ Association local, state, and national chapters and local and state Chambers of Commerce.
Education:
- Write articles for the CFR newsletters (including RCASENCE), blog, and use other communication modes to educate the members about advocacy efforts and supported candidates.
Branding:
- Coordinate with the Director of Marketing and Communications to secure earned media for advocacy related issues.
- Build positive relationships with local media contacts.
Administration:
- Maintain department files and serve as key contact for staff relating to government affairs activities.
Core Standards:
- Assists CEO to ensure related NAR Core Standards are achieved annually.
Professional Standards Administrator:
- Handles all administrative aspects of professional standards cases including responding to complaints, scheduling hearings, and supporting hearing panel members.
Education and Experience
- Four years experience in a REALTOR® related association or business is preferred.
- Four to six years of experience in an advocacy-related field.
- Prior lobbying experience a plus.
- Real estate advocacy experience is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science or related degree preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $96,000.00 per year
