What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lower School Literacy Coach position at Cape Henry Collegiate?
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Head of Lower School and in collaboration with the Director of Learning Support, the Lower School Literacy Coach plays a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence by providing guidance, support and expertise in literacy instruction. This individual will deliver targeted small-group literacy intervention, collaborate with teachers during the language arts block to support student learning, and coach educators in implementing evidence-based Tier One instruction. Additionally, the Literacy Coach will assist with the administration and interpretation of literacy assessments to inform small-group intervention and classroom instruction.
The ideal candidate is knowledgeable about the Science of Reading and its implementation, passionate about literacy development, skilled in differentiated instruction, and experienced in supporting both students and educators to enhance literacy outcomes. Strong communication skills with students, teachers, and parents are essential.
ESSENTIAL TASKS

Student Support
- Provide pull-out literacy intervention for students requiring additional support.
- Push into classrooms during the language arts block to support students and reinforce effective literacy instruction.
- Assess students’ reading and writing progress using formal and informal assessments to guide instruction.
- Collaborate with the Director of Learning Support to identify students needing more intensive intervention.
- Collaborate with teachers to strengthen Tier One literacy instruction using evidence-based practices.
- Model, co-teach and provide feedback on effective literacy strategies.
- Assist teachers in analyzing student data to inform instructional decisions.
- Lead professional development sessions on literacy instruction, curriculum implementation, and differentiation.
Curricular & Instructional Leadership
- Stay current with research-based best practices in literacy instruction and intervention.
- Support the alignment of literacy instruction with school-wide curriculum goals and standards.
- Work closely with administrators and teachers to evaluate and enhance the school’s literacy program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree in literacy, reading instruction, education or a related field preferred.
- Experience in literacy intervention and coaching teachers in best practices.
- Knowledge of structured literacy, the Science of Reading and balanced literacy approaches.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with students, teachers, and administrators.
- Experience using assessment tools to track student progress and inform instruction.
