Position Overview:
The Operations Manager for the Capital City Public Market is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the market on Saturdays. This includes managing assistants and staff, ensuring smooth set-up and breakdown of market infrastructure, overseeing vendor operations, and maintaining a safe and clean environment for both vendors and customers. The ideal candidate is proactive, hands-on, and has a strong ability to coordinate and lead a team in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Market Setup & Breakdown:
- Be the first to arrive and unlock the storage unit.
- Place booth map markings and prepare market signage.
- Assist with setting up equipment and infrastructure (e.g., trash bins, booths, signage).
- Oversee the breakdown of the market at the end of the day, ensuring all equipment is collected and storage is securely locked.
- Staff & Vendor Management:
- Supervise and coordinate market assistants, staff, volunteers, and vendors to ensure smooth operations.
- Manage the opening and closing duties for staff and volunteers.
- Ensure vendors are set up and ready before market opening and are fully packed up by closing time.
- Be a visible and approachable point of contact for vendors and customers during the market day.
- Vendor Payment & Record-Keeping:
- Collect vendor payments on market day and maintain accurate financial records.
- Ensure proper cash handling and tracking of payments.
- Market Operations Supervision:
- Ensure efficient operations of key areas: information booth, EBT/token sales, trash management, signage, crowd counts, and surveys.
- Supervise assistants and volunteers to ensure all tasks are completed efficiently and accurately.
- Staff Scheduling:
- Create the assistant schedule for market days, ensuring adequate staffing levels for regular market operations and special events.
- Market Cleanliness & Safety:
- At the end of each market day, ensure the market area is clean, all items have been collected, and every vendor has left the premises.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to kneel, crouch, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs (sometimes up to 75 lbs).
- Work will take place outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, heat, and cold.
Qualifications:
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills and customer service orientation.
- Previous experience in event or market management is a plus.
- Ability to handle physical tasks related to market setup, breakdown, and vendor management.
- A proactive, positive attitude with the ability to adapt to changing conditions.
