The Director of Career Development provides leadership and vision to the career development function of the university and provides related direct service to students and alumni. The Director's work includes leading the infusion of career development and vocational discernment throughout the curriculum, co-curriculum, and Signature Learning program. This is achieved in the areas of major exploration, career planning, development and implementation of career goals to prepare students and alumni for success in their careers and/or graduate and professional school. The Director is also charged with building strong employer relationships to cultivate partnerships for internships and other opportunities for experiential learning.


Primary roles and responsibilities:

  • Employer Relationship Building: Serve as point of contact for employers when recruiting Capital students; Coordinate employer relations initiatives, manage existing relationships, and establish new relationships; Coordinate recruitment activities (e.g., on and off-campus recruiting and job fairs, interview schedules); Partner with Academic Departments, Alumni Engagement, and other University units to identify and build mutually beneficial relationships with employers; Develops and maintains contact with academic departments concerning current job and internship openings, develops collaborative career-related initiatives with faculty; vocational discernment.
  • Career Planning: Advise and coach traditional students, adult & graduate students, and alumni; Assess students' needs, and advance students' career development; Develop and facilitate programs and classroom presentations on a variety of career topics; Create career-related educational materials, including web content; Establish partnerships with academic and administrative departments to share and promote high-impact practices.
  • Administrative: Trains, supervises, and evaluates work performance of Associate Director and (indirectly) Peer Career Advisors; Evaluates and responds to student needs (e.g., greets visitors or answers phone, determines nature of needs, offers assistance or directs to appropriate resources): Answers or directs questions and concerns of students, alumni and faculty regarding recruiting procedures, center facilities, job searching, and career planning resources; Reviews analyses of activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine department or division progress toward stated goals and objectives; Provides support and leadership for university initiatives when applicable.
  • Student Success: Serve as a Student Success coach to a designated group of students as well as provide walk-in support for students in need.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Maintains statistics to prepare reports regarding activities of the office; utilizes data to assist in developing future goals and strategies; Formulates and administers policies and develops long range goals and objectives; Implements and updates Assessment Plan on a continuous basis; Develops annual report.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent preferred; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to understand, communicate with and effectively interact with people across cultures. Possesses a positive attitude towards cultural differences. Willing to gain knowledge of different cultural practices and world views and determine how those practices and views will factor in during investigations, complaints, reports, findings, etc.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent skills in the Microsoft suite of products, inDesign, Canva, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to respond effectively to the sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to effectively present information to a wide range of constituents. Ability to facilitate discussion groups and workshops; ability to coordinate events; ability to update and maintain social media presence and organizational listservs.
  • This position requires the ability and/or skill to: work closely and professionally with others as part of a team, be flexible, pay attention to detail, work without supervision and demonstrate considerable initiative, communicate professionally through both verbal and written means, work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds, manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines, establish departmental goals and priorities, contribute to Capital University's mission and vision.
