The Senior Accountant / Accountant III performs the accounting and financial functions for both central office departments as well as individual school programs. These duties include analyzing complex financial records, reviewing financial statements, performing account reconciliations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Key duties include preparing journal entries, investigating accounting discrepancies, and assisting with audit preparations. This position reports to the Accounting and Grants Manager.
Essential Functions
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates the centralized accounting and financial reporting for assigned grants and programs.
- Assists program managers in the preparation of operating budgets and grant proposals using various templates, spreadsheets, application of appropriate cost principles, indirect cost rates and internal charges.
- Maintains accounting records to ensure up to date account balances and monitors and reports budget performance and compliance with Council approvals and external funding sources.
- Prepares monthly financial reports such as balance sheet, YTD budget analysis, detailing all operating revenues, expenditures, and other fund balance transactions
- Monitor and review grant expenditures for authenticity, compliance with grant guidelines and regulations, and adherence to budgetary restrictions.
- Generate and submit timely interim and final financial reports to oversight agencies. Follow-up as necessary to ensure accurate submission of data.
- Schedule periodic meetings and / or training with operational staff to review, analyze, and plan activities to ensure compliance with grant restrictions and expenditure guidelines, communicating with budget administrators and clerical staff to ensure accuracy of the information reported.
- Provide assistance and financial expertise to grant staff to effectively develop grant applications and implement awarded grants.
- Prepare adjusting entries and generate budget adjustments, as necessary.
- Collaborate in end-of-year closeout of program and grant activities.
- Prepares a variety of management reports for CREC, and reports for various government agencies, insurance carriers and school districts.
- Ensure compliance with internal control procedures and identify areas for improvement.
- Assist with gathering of information and preparation of reports and schedules, as necessary to prepare for oversight agency reviews and audits.
- Assist external and regulatory auditors, upon request.
- Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of laws relating to accounting and grant operations practices.
- Maintain confidentiality of information.
- Perform other accounting related work and financial analyses, as assigned.
