CARBON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE CORRECTION OFFICER NOTICE OF EXAMINATION
The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office will be compiling a roster from which qualified individuals may be selected when openings for Correction Officers occur. Utah law requires competitive examinations to determine the qualifications of applicants for positions as Correction Officers. The examination will be designed to fairly test the mental and physical ability and knowledge of the applicants in regards to this position.
Applicants who qualify to take the examinations must score at least 70% on the written aptitude test and pass an oral test. Unless currently certified, applicants will also be required to pass a pre-POST physical fitness test.
Applicants for the examination process must be a minimum of 19 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Applicants will be disqualified if they have been convicted, as defined under Utah law, of (a) any felony; (b) any Class A Misdemeanor; (c) domestic violence; (d) Class B Misdemeanor DUI within the last five years; or (e) any criminal offense inimical to the public service, or involving moral turpitude.
Selected applicants must reside in Carbon County or relocate within one (1) year from date of hire.

Title: Corrections Officer
Reports To: Carbon County Sheriff & Jail Commander
Full Time
FLSA Status: Non Exempt
Overall Responsibility:
Works under the supervision of the Carbon County Sheriff and under direct supervision of the Jail Commander. Processes inmates in and out of the jail. Is responsible for internal security. Maintains Jail records. Transports inmates
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Assists in operating the Jail within established Departmental policies and in accordance with Utah Law, the Utah Jail Standards, the laws of the United States and decisions of the Courts
When required performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statutes or ordinances of the state of Utah or any of its political subdivisions
Maintains the records of the jail in an accurate and orderly fashion
Writes reports and maintains a daily log
Ensures that inmates are quickly and correctly processed in and out of the facility
Ensures that inmates are properly cared for with respect to food, clothing, hygiene and medical requirements
Handles jail visitors in a polite but secure fashion
Takes immediate and direct action in disciplinary situations
Reports such problems to supervisors as soon as possible
Maintains professional relations with other law enforcement agencies and the public
Acts as bail commissioner for persons arrested on warrants, commitments and other violations
Maintains proper financial records and receipts inmate property and funds
Acts as court bailiff when necessary
Performs other related duties as required
Daily contact with the general public
Performs duties that consist of providing community protection
Must be able to deal with potentially violent situations
Responds to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others
Must deal calmly and professionally with persons under extreme stress and often behaving irrationally and/or who are intoxicated or under the influence of controlled substances
Must deal in professional manner with member of the legal profession, clergy, medical profession, judges and other law enforcement agencies
Skills and Attributes:
Problems involve mostly routine matters
Officer is guided by clear and necessary policies but may be required to make immediate and thoughtful application of them
Problems arise regarding security and relations between inmates
Must be sensitive to the needs and problems of inmates of the opposite sex
Errors could cause physical injury or death to self or others. Errors could potentially cause
serious liability to self and to the County (This position places life or personal safety at risk)
Requires an extremely high sense of duty and loyalty and a desire to serve and protect the public
May be held personally responsible for property received from prisoners being booked into the jail
Experience Requirement:
Must be at least 19 years of age and a U.S. citizen
Requires a high-school diploma or G.E.D equivalent
P.O.S.T. certification
Must complete 40 hours annual in-service training
Experience is preferred, but uncertified persons may be accepted if they complete the Academy training as part of their six-month probation
Must never have been convicted of a Felony nor of Class A Misdemeanor, nor of the Class B Misdemeanor of DUI within the last five (5) years
Must never have been convicted of domestic violence or assault
Must undergo a thorough physical and psychological examination as well as a drug screening
Must be willing to undergo a thorough background screening
Must pass entry level academic test as provided by the State of Utah
Good typing and computer skills preferred
Maintains high standard of confidentiality
Must pass Merit Board testing
Physical Effort/Environment:
Work is performed in a potentially life-threatening environment
Requires a high state of mental and physical fitness
Must be able to exercise reasonable force in restraining inmates who may be larger or stronger
Must convey detailed or important instructions and receive ordinary information
Average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents
Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
Lift up to a minimum of 50 pounds
Must be willing and able to work shifts as assigned including nights, weekends and holidays
*The Sheriff’s Office also works under certain protocols established by judicial decision, and the Laws of the State of Utah and of the United States. These include some codes of conduct that are universal in the State for this position. Compliance at all times with those is part of this job description. The Sheriff may, from time to time, impose other requirements reasonably related to the good operation of the Office. The Courts have ruled that governmental entities that are “para-military” in nature may impose certain more stringent uniform and grooming requirements. Nothing contained herein shall be so construed by any employee as grounds to refuse to perform any duty reasonably associated with this position.
