CARBON COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF’S
MERIT COMMISSION
NOTICE OF EXAMINATION
The Carbon County Deputy Sheriff’s Merit Commission will be compiling a roster from which qualified individuals may be selected when openings for Carbon County Deputy Sheriff’s occur. Utah law requires the Commission to administer competitive examinations to determine the qualifications of applicants for positions as Deputy Sheriff’s. The examination will be designed to fairly test the mental and physical ability and knowledge of the applicants in regards to this position.
Applicants who qualify to take the examinations must score at least 70% on the written aptitude test. Unless currently certified, applicants will also be required to pass a pre-POST physical fitness test. Both examinations will be conducted by the Carbon County Sheriff’s Merit Commission. Applicants who successfully complete the examination process will then be further interviewed personally by the Merit Commission.
Applicants for the examination process must be a minimum of 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Applicants will be disqualified if they have been convicted, as defined under Utah law, of (a) any felony; (b) any Class A Misdemeanor; (c) domestic violence; (d) Class B Misdemeanor DUI within the last five years; or (e) any criminal offense inimical to the public service, or involving moral turpitude.
Selected applicants must reside in Carbon County or relocate within one (1) year from date of hire.
Starting Wage: $25.59 /hr, increasing to $27.80 /hr after a one-year probationary period (additional credit for years of service may be applied based on experience and qualifications)

DEPUTY SHERIFF JOB DESCRIPTION
Overall Responsibility:
A deputy of the County sheriff; i.e., an extension of his/her authority and bearing the same general statutory burden, authority and duty (except for supervision and policy). General duties include: traffic and security patrol, investigations, enforcement of the laws of the County and State; arrests and jail bookings, civil process and courts
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Must be a competent driver
Must achieve firearms competence as required by the State and the Department
Investigate both misdemeanor and felony complaints
Responds to radio calls
Books prisoners into the jail and assist Correction Officers are required
Accurately report and log activities and perform other clerical functions as required by the law and the department
Execute warrants and serve Civil Process as required
Serve as an Officer of the Court/Bailiff of the Court as required
Ability to learn and execute radio communication protocols
Transport prisoners
Other related duties as required
*Requires that employee is on call 24 hours, as needed. This includes answering of any and all cell phone calls, even if not regular scheduled work shifts.
Skills and Attributes:
Problems involve mostly routine matters which are guided by State and Departmental policies
and procedures. However, rapid situational assessment and application of those policies and
the training received is almost daily necessities
Judgmental calls according to the human and environmental factors are required
Daily contact with the general public
Must be able to deal with potentially violent situations
Must deal calmly and professionally with persons under extreme stress and often behaving irrationally and/or who are intoxicated or under the influence of controlled substances
Must deal in professional manner with member of the general public, legal profession, clergy, medical profession, judges and other law enforcement agencies
*Errors could cause physical injury or death to self or others. Errors could potentially cause
serious liability to self and to the County. Could bring disrepute on the Office of Sheriff
Position requires an extremely high sense of duty and loyalty and a desire to serve and

Experience Requirement:
Must be a U.S. citizen and be at least 21 years of age
Requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
P.O.S.T. certification through a special course at the Academy
Must complete 40 hours annual in-service training
Previous experience preferred
Must never have been convicted of a Felony, domestic violence nor of Class A Misdemeanor nor of a Class B Misdemeanor of DUI within the last five years
Must undergo a thorough physical and psychological examination as well as a drug screening
Must be willing to undergo a thorough background screening
Must be computer literate
Must possess both verbal and written communication skills
Must pass Merit Board exam
Physical Effort/Environment:
Performs duties that actively prevent or detect crime and enforce criminal statues or ordinances of the state of Utah or any of its political subdivisions
Responds to situations involving threats to public safety and making emergency decisions affecting the lives and health of others
Performs duties that consist of providing community protection

*The Sheriff’s Office also works under certain protocols established by judicial decision, and the Laws of the State of Utah and of the United States. These include some codes of conduct that are universal in the State for this position. Compliance at all times with those is part of this job description. The Sheriff may, from time to time, impose other requirements reasonably related to the good operation of the Office. The Courts have ruled that governmental entities that are “para-military” in nature may impose certain more stringent uniform and grooming requirements. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office, may with the approval of the Merit Service Commission and Board of Commissioners institute alternate disciplinary procedures providing only that they comply with minimum due process requirements. Nothing contained herein shall be so construed by any employee as grounds to refuse to perform any duty reasonably associated with this position.
