Summary of Position
Facilitate patient, family, staff, and hospital relations in a professional manner that promotes Cardinal’s mission. Facilitate the donation process through interactions with hospital personnel, and patients/families, to complete needed paperwork and the collection/storage of birth tissue. Collect and maintain documentation needed for all donations and ensure the accuracy of all paperwork.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct and interpersonal relationship development, to promote a positive and collaborative work environment with patients and staff.
- Educate hospital staff on the tissue donation process, to optimize outcomes and increase the number of tissues received. Ensure that all processes and procedures are understood.
- Assist hospitals in process improvement through development and refinement of policies and procedures, in conjunction with industry standards and federal/state law, to maximize tissue donation where applicable.
- Promote a culture of donation within the hospital.
- Discuss with patients/families the donation process.
- Aid the patients in completing the Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI) and Informed Consent.
- Inform hospital staff of available donor, and ensure that hospital staff collect screening blood prior to delivery, and before any IV fluids are given.
- Ensure hospital staff place birth tissue in Cardinal refrigerators no more than 30 minutes after delivery.
- Work with hospital staff to complete the delivery record/physical exam after delivery.
- Stress the importance of strict compliance with HIPAA regulations, and patient data privacy principles.
- Ensure patient eligibility based on client criteria.
- Transport collected birth tissue and paperwork (electronic or physical copies) from hospitals to processing lab in a clean, temperature-controlled environment.
- Work with Cardinal lab technicians to ensure all paperwork is in place.
- Other functions as assigned or required to meet department or organizational needs.
Authorities for Position
- Inform patients/families of the donation process.
- Communicate to hospital staff and organize information regarding the tissue donation process.
- Prescreen patient/tissue eligibility based on DRAI and prenatal results
- Transport paperwork/tissues.
Qualifications Required for Position
- High School Diploma or equivalent is the minimum requirement.
- Advanced degree (Associate, Bachelor, RN, or Masters) or commensurate experience strongly encouraged.
- Valid driver’s license and access to an insured reliable automobile.
- Possess strong data entry skills, to ensure accurate and timely input of patient data into the documentation system.
- Experience with hospital settings, donation process, counseling, social work, service are strongly recommended.
- Proficient in efficient navigation through EMR systems interface, to include ability to swiftly access and transfer patient records (medical history, pregnancy summary, delivery summary, lab results, etc.). Assist Cardinal staff in education or troubleshooting the EMR system.
Work Environment
Hospital OB setting, patient delivery suites, car/travel time daily, processing lab setting intermittent. Inherent risks for viral or bacterial infections from exposure to sick patients, human biological samples, and blood. Hazardous materials handling with personal protective equipment essential to safety at all stages.
