The Staff Development Nurse (SDN) is responsible for overall education, in-service, and orientation of the nursing department. The SDN plans, develops, implements and records all education activities. The SDN assists with interviewing and hiring of potential personnel and assumes other related nursing responsibilities as assigned by the Director Of Nursing.
Education
The Staff Development Nurse must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently registered with the state agency for nursing licensure, and hold a valid nursing license in the state the Staff Development Nurse is employed. Must have a pre-employment and an annual Tuberculosis screening examination as required by the state the Staff Development Nurse is employedResponsibilitiesThe Staff Development Nurse works with the Director of Nursing to assure the following responsibilities are accomplished. Supervises resident care techniques in relation to skills competency of nursing staff to include medication pass, incontinent care, restorative techniques, tube feeding, catheter care, etc.2. Rounds to monitor how staff provides resident care as a basis for determining priorities in designing ongoing in-service program, with the assistance from department heads and consultants.3. Maintains and oversees Infection Control Program, follows up on lab, ensures resident infections are resolved.4. Maintains Resident and Employee Vaccination Program to include administering vaccines and monitoring for side effects.5. Does orientation for all new personnel. Plans and implements in-service programs for the development and improvement of the skills of all facility personnel.7. Monitors and evaluates the ongoing orientation and in-service activities for new and current staff in all departments. 8. Checks care of residents to ensure plan of care is followed by staff.9. Maintains records for the staff development program: total program schedule, each program service attended or presented and individual employee record documentation in accordance to policy and procedure.10. Provides and uses a variety of teaching methods, materials and resources for program presentations.11. Assists with and participates in the orientation and in-service for volunteers.12. Assists with the development and conduct of student affiliate programs as a stimulator for developing these programs and as a facility liaison person with the appropriate school representatives.13. Interviews perspective candidates for nurse assistant hiring, and training program.14. Plans and implements Nurse Aide training program in accordance with state and federal requirements. 15. Maintains comfortable and pleasant environment and promotes elimination of hazards.16. Ensures supplies are available in proper quantities, that equipment is available in good condition, and those personnel using such supplies and equipment know where such are to be found and know the proper care and use. 17. Ensures that all personnel on the shift are oriented to the duties assigned to them.17. Assigns personnel according to various skills in relation to resident needs.18. Stimulates interest and attitudes in personnel to develop understanding of and encourage health and restorative nursing practices.19. Gives guidance to personnel as needed, evaluates performance, and discusses progress, needs or improvement. 20. Have the ability to learn computer systems, system applications and related office equipment. 21. Promotes effective work relationships with the administrator, medical staff, personnel, volunteers, agencies, and management staff affiliated with the facility. 22. Reports immediately to Director of Nursing and Facility Administrator, situations involving abuse, neglect, or suspicion of a crime. 29. Adheres to the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, HIPAA Standard, and Computer Usage Agreement.30. Performs any other responsibilities as discussed and designated by the Director of Nursing.
