Reports to: Shelter Manager
Description:
This position provides support in all areas of animal care at the shelter. Day to day operations include animal kenneling cleanliness, feeding and laundry support. The shelter is an integral part of the Community and we strive to provide the best professional services that we can. Every team member has an important role to contribute to the welfare of all the animals we receive. The Animal Shelter Assistant will follow all protocols and guidelines set in place for the safety and security of the animals, the shelter and staff.
Duties:
1) Must have and be able to demonstrate knowledge of basic animal care standards including safe animal handling procedures for domestic animals and basic understanding of feeding.
2) Help in identifying sick and diseased animals, taking precautions to prevent the spread of disease to other animals or humans, follow Veterinary medical direction.
3) Daily cleaning of all animal kennels using approved methods and products taking care to observe animal behaviors to assist the team with outcomes.
4) Feed the animals according to their charts whether they have special needs etc. Document eating habits and stool habits on the feeding chart daily. Coordinate with the team on any medications that needed to be administered.
5) Rotate with team members on animal care and feeding during holidays and closures as required.
6) Keep current with the laundry needs of the shelter, ensure the laundry room and equipment is kept clean following sanitization protocols.
7) Assist shelter team with any behavior testing as requested.
8) Work to socialize Animals in Play Yard.
9) Bath Animals as needed.
10) Any other duties as assigned by the manager or the Director
Working Conditions:
Work environment may have regular exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as zoonotic diseases, parasites, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, pathogenic substances, animal attacks or animal bites. The noise level in the work environment may be very loud at times.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation. Sitting or standing for 6-8 hours per day. The job requires bending, stooping and kneeling.
Minimum Requirements:
High School Diploma/GED required. Requires 1 year experience in the care and treatment of animals or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
