Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for assisting the Director of School Facilities and Operations in the supervision, administration, and coordination of school district maintenance, custodial, and transportation services. This position ensures the efficient and safe operation of district facilities, grounds, and equipment while managing personnel, overseeing budgets, and maintaining compliance with safety regulations. The role requires technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to perform physical tasks as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Maintenance
- Assist in implementing and overseeing a preventative maintenance program to maximize the longevity of district buildings and equipment.
- Support minor construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects as required.
- Ensure the proper operation of heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Operate and oversee maintenance equipment, including mowers, blowers, plows, salt spreaders, and irrigation systems.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and address building and equipment defects.
Safety & Compliance
- Assist in installing and maintaining safety equipment and protocols to protect students and staff.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Respond to emergency situations, including nights and weekends as needed.
Personnel & Supervision
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of custodial and maintenance staff.
- Maintain positive working relationships with employees and ensure effective communication and teamwork.
- Assist with staff training, performance evaluations, and scheduling.
Budget & Administration
- Assist in the preparation of budgets related to maintenance, operations, and transportation.
- Provide cost estimates for renovations, repairs, and facility improvements.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Correspond with vendors and contractors to ensure services are completed as requested.
Transportation & CDL Requirements
- May be required to drive district vehicles, including buses, and hold a CDL License with Passenger Endorsement.
Additional Duties:
- Attend and participate in meetings, training sessions, and in-services.
- Maintain confidentiality and ensure a positive work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and Superintendent.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required:
· High School Diploma and at least two years of supervisory experience over custodial and maintenance personnel, OR
· Four years of building maintenance experience, including at least two years in a supervisory role, OR
· An equivalent combination of training and experience.
· Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in heating, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, carpentry, painting, custodial, and grounds maintenance.
· Ability to inspect, identify, and remedy defects in buildings and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
· Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to maintain efficiency and harmony in working relationships among subordinates.
· Ability to communicate, understand, and execute oral and written directions, and effectively provide feedback to the Director of Operations.
· Experience operating maintenance equipment, such as mowers, plows, salt spreaders, and irrigation systems. Floor Scrubbers, Banishers and others.
· CDL License with Passenger Endorsement (or willingness to obtain).
· Ability to lift 75-100 pounds and perform physical labor.
Preferred:
- Experience in construction drafting, reading blueprints, and interpreting specifications.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations outside of normal working hours.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand, walk, lift, bend, and perform physical labor for extended periods.
- May require occasional overnight or weekend work in response to emergencies.
