Position Overview :

The Associate Chaplain for Muslim and Interfaith Life will work closely with the other chaplaincy staff, providing religious, programmatic, and educational resources to Muslim students and the entire College community. The Muslim Chaplain will help to promote interfaith life for all on campus, contributing to its on-going strength and development by serving as : a religious leader, community builder, educator, supervisor, and program coordinator for religion and spirituality.

Compensation :

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $42,100 and $44,400. The salary range has been prorated based on the part-time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Department Overview :

The role of the Carleton Chaplaincy is to help deepen the spiritual and ethical life of the campus. We provide students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to explore the integral relationship between faith and learning, connecting the work of the mind with the heart and soul. We serve people of all faiths as well as those exploring spirituality in their lives.

Essential Job Functions / Responsibilities :

Plan and help to lead Muslim holiday, religious, and cultural events, working closely with the other chaplaincy staff, the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and Carleton faculty, staff, and students.

Advise the MSA and other student religious groups, helping them plan for events, programs, or worship.

Initiate programs and events for the nurture and education of the Muslim community and the campus at large.

Work collaboratively with campus constituencies in advocating for the needs of students who identify as religious and help to implement appropriate supports including coordination with dining services, residence life, and other departments and individuals.

Advise the Muslim Interest House, helping to coordinate applications and programming.

Participate in the Council for Religious Understanding, a biweekly interfaith dialogue student group.

Counsel students, faculty, and staff as needed and appropriate.

Describe Supervision Received and Exercised :

Meet regularly with the Chaplain to assess and plan.

Meet regularly with the Muslim Chaplain's Associate (a student peer leader) to assess and plan.

Education / Experience / Skills :

Required :

Master's degree in a relevant field, or in the process of acquiring a master’s degree in related field.

Experience with evidence of professional preparation for chaplaincy.

Demonstrated aptitude for dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.

Familiarity with a diverse higher education environment and with developmental issues of young adults.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Ability to work with undergraduates and colleagues from a wide array of backgrounds, faith traditions, sects and cultures.

Schedule flexibility to allow for some evening or weekend hours for special events.

Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
