Position Title : Associate Chaplain for Muslim Life
Department : College Ministry
Reports To : Senior College Pastor
Classification : Exempt FTE : 0.40
Essential Job Duties :
- Serve as a member of the multi-faith College Ministry team, providing worship opportunities, spiritual care, religious education, and program support for St. Olaf students, particularly for those who identify as Muslim
- Plan and help to lead Muslim holiday, religious, educational, and cultural events, working with the other members of the College Ministry team, the Muslim Student Association (MSA), and other St. Olaf staff, faculty, and students
- Advise the MSA and, as appropriate, other student religious groups, helping them plan for events, programs, or worship
- Provide learning opportunities for students, such as Quran study and book groups
- Collaborate with colleagues in other offices to help meet the residential and co-curricular needs of students who identify as Muslim
- Support the development of, and participate in, programming designed to foster inter-religious education and engagement
- Contribute to the team's support of student religious organizations from all faith traditions
- Provide pastoral care
- Meet with students to discuss matters of college life, vocational discernment and faith
- Foster relationships with students and build inclusive community through participation in community events, student organizations and student activities
- Serve as chaplain to the college community
- Promote community engagement with questions of faith and value
- Collaborate with other units of the college to foster student development and well-being
- Participate as a spiritual leader in community events as requested, including alumni and parent events
- Collaborate as needed in planning special services (i.e. convocations, memorial services)
- Other Duties
- Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community
- Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle
- Perform other duties as assigned
Work Schedule :
Term : August - May, with occasional hours for program development activities in June and July
Shift : 832 hours total to be worked; averaging 18 hours per week, hours to be worked primarily between Monday-Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. - 5 : 00 p.m., schedule established with supervisor; includes periodic evening and weekend hours; travel up to 5% of work schedule, which includes local (Twin Cities and and metro area), for professional development or student activities Flexible work arrangements can be proposed and are subject to approval by HR and relevant supervisors.
Required Qualifications :
Education : Master's degree in a relevant field at the time of application or anticipated for completion by the end of the first year of appointment; significant professional experience in a relevant field, or other relevant educational credentials, may modify the degree requirements; maintain a valid driver's license and meet St. Olaf College driver authorization criteria with a satisfactory driving record
Experience : 2 years of experience in a relevant field
Preferred Qualifications :
Education : Evidence of educational experiences relevant to chaplaincy, such as graduate coursework, clinical pastoral education, or certification
Experience : 2 years of experience in a relevant field beyond an internship or graduate assistantship position(s); experience working with college students or other young adult populations
Prerequisites :
Employment in this position is conditioned upon successful completion of a background check, which may include criminal background checks, reference checks, verification of work history, verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and / or certifications, a motor vehicle check, verification of a DOT certification, a credit check, employment eligibility verification, and / or a pre-employment physical.
