Commonwealth Attorney's Office - Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Description : The Carroll County Commonwealth Attorney's Office includes the elected Commonwealth Attorney, his Chief Deputy, 2 Assistant Commonwealth Attorneys, and 2 Administrative Assistants. Recent state funding has allowed the hiring of up to 2 additional Assistant Commonwealth Attorneys and a Secretary. While each person has their respective primary responsibilities, the office is highly interactive, with the entire staff working together to address major cases. The Victim-Witness Coordinator's Office is located within the same suite to integrate all aspects of the prosecution team. We work hard, but we also enjoy sharing our time together.General Definition of Work : Performs difficult and complex professional work prosecuting cases for the Commonwealth Attorney's Office under policies established by the Elected Commonwealth Attorney, administratively managing the resources to fulfill goals and directives of the Commonwealth Attorney. Responsibilities include : Prosecuting cases primarily at the General District Court and also at the Circuit Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court levels.Completing any other tasks or assignments as assigned by the Commonwealth's Attorney.Engaging in the overall practice of prosecuting cases at all levels of Courts in Virginia.Qualification Requirements : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Essential Functions : Provides professional direction, evaluation, and advice to police agencies with regard to their administration.Attends meetings and provides staff advice to the Commonwealth Attorney; attends a variety of meetings outside of normal work hours.Provides public addresses to professional and community groups.Exercises independent decision making on issues related to prosecution of crimes within the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth Attorney's Office.Must be able to try cases at all Court levels in the Commonwealth. Case load will include a large majority of General District Court cases, with cases in Circuit Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court as well.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Thorough knowledge of the organization, function, and methods of operation of the Carroll County Commonwealth Attorney's Office; thorough knowledge of the Code of Virginia, other general statutes, ordinances, and other legislation affecting the role of prosecution of crimes.Education and Experience : - Bachelor's Degree and Law Degree, and- Possess a current Virginia Bar License and must not have any disciplinary actions by the Virginia State Bar within the past 3 years, and- PREFERRED : 3 years experience as a prosecutor or similar experience in the practice of law.Physical Requirements : This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and occasionally requires reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).Special Requirements : Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.Valid Virginia State Bar license.Salary / Salary Range : $56,700 to $59,500 annuallyContact : Jennifer.spangler@carrollcountyva.gov#J-18808-Ljbffr
