Position : Senior Accountant

Reports to : Controller

Employment Status : Full-time / Exempt, Benefits Eligible, Hybrid

Location : Hybrid / Flexible - CASA of Los Angeles, Edelman Children's Court, 201 Centre Plaza Suite 1100, Monterey Park, CA 91754. Mon - Fri 8AM-5PM, weekend / evenings, required in office 2 days a week minimum.

  • Compensation and Job Title is commensurate with experience and may fall under the following pay ranges :

Senior Accountant - $85,000-$92,000 annually. Please note that the salary information is a general guideline only. CASA of Los Angeles considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education / training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.

Organization Overview

CASA of Los Angeles mobilizes community volunteers to advocate for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The organization envisions a Los Angeles in which every child in the child welfare system has an advocate and the opportunity to thrive. CASA of Los Angeles is on a path over the next five years to expand services to children in LA County's child welfare system to provide services to a meaningful number of the 30,000 children in the dependency court system every year. Key to these efforts is growth in the number of volunteers trained each year, the number who stay active in a year, and revenue raised from community partners and other donors.

The Finance Department at CASA / LA aims to equip the organization with the tools needed to serve systems-impacted youth and further its organizational mission. Through fiscal management, analysis, budgeting, and forecasting, the growing finance administration team plays a pivotal role in aiding key staff and the leadership team with the information needed to make the best programmatic and operational decisions.

As part of its strategic vision, CASA / LA is applying a new focus on procuring additional government grant funding to further the impact of its mission. The organization is thus seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to support this focus and assist in expanding the Finance infrastructure.

Position Overview

This position within CASA / LA will require expertise in the following areas : The application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), 2 CFR 200, financial statement preparation, the monthly accounting cycle close and must be willing to take the lead in strengthening the organization's accounting procedures.

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for assisting the Controller and becoming part of the accounting team which may involve but not limited to : grant accounting and reporting, allocations of shared costs, budget development, ensuring compliance with Uniform Administrative Requirements and contract terms and conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities (not limited to) :

  • Prepare the monthly financial reports (income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flow).
  • Maintain general ledger accounts and prepare and review monthly trial balance account reconciliations.
  • Communicate updates to the accounting codes to all relevant staff and supervisors as needed.
  • Perform detailed financial analyses to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings or revenue growth
  • Assist the Controller with the preparation of the annual budget, forecasts, and long-term financial models
  • Prepare and review journal entries and ensure proper documentation for accounting transactions in accordance with accounting standards and government regulations
  • Assist in month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Accounting Manager to prepare government contracts invoices and create budgets as needed.
  • Prepare foundation grants expense reports and budgets as requested by the Development Department to support proposals.
  • Work in conjunction with the Controller, Grant Accounting Manager, Accounting Specialist, Development Department, and program leadership to ensure the accuracy of costs charged to various grants and the proper personnel allocations to various projects agency-wide.
  • Assist with the organization annual audit and program audits
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP / FASB, OMB, 2 CFR Part 200 standards and other applicable laws and regulations
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of sensitive employee data, only sharing with authorized personnel and required funders as needed.
  • Other Duties :

  • Exercise leadership, independent decision-making, and professional judgment in day-to-day problem solving with team members and CASA staff.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff team meetings and one-on-one supervisory meetings.
  • Exercise sound and professional judgment in communicating sensitive employee or financial data.
  • Minimal local travel may be required on an as-needed basis.
  • Occasional evening overtime and weekend work may be required.
  • Attend and actively participate in all required pieces of training.
  • Participate in a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education per year.
  • Other projects as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; in the areas of Finance, Accounting, or Business Management. C.P.A. is highly desirable but not mandatory.
  • 5 or more years of professional experience in a nonprofit or government setting, preferably in a similar position.
  • Expert knowledge in financial statement preparation.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including formulas such as 'VLOOKUP,' pivot tables, macros, and Smart View.
  • Experience with Oracle NetSuite ERP and NSPB is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience working in ERP and budgeting systems
  • Highly proficient in MS Office and adaptable in learning different software applications.
  • Detail-oriented and adheres to clear deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work within a multicultural environment serving children and families of diverse backgrounds.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must satisfactorily pass Livescan background check and employment / reference check.

  • Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • The CASA office is an open office layout. Candidates will work in a shared space with varying noise levels and foot traffic.
  • Lifting can be up to 20 lbs.
  • This position is a flexible hybrid environment between remote and office. Which may include work in the field as needed, and could involve intermittent physical activities, including standing, bending, reaching, sitting, speaking, and walking.
