Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Director of Inclusion, Advocacy and Community and in close collaboration with campus stakeholders, the Cascadia Scholars Program Lead will work in tandem with the Office of Inclusion, Advocacy and Community team to create and oversee a holistic program for marginalized and underrepresented students at Cascadia College that helps students connect to the college and to their educational goals. The overall goal is to increase the recruitment, retention, and college completion of ethnically- and racially marginalized students in a way that students feel a sense of strength, belonging, and thriving at Cascadia College. The Cascadia Scholars Program Lead will be the direct connection and support to students in the Cascadia Scholars program. This position at Cascadia College plays a crucial role on the E&I program development team and will be encouraged to actively collaborate.

As the Cascadia Scholars Program Lead it is expected that the following qualities will be demonstrated daily: a high degree of understanding and empathy for all students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as the ability to encourage the inclusion of all voices in decision-making, promoting equity in all areas, and actively working against institutionalized norms of oppression against historically marginalized people.

Employee Type: Full Time Exempt, Permanent

Initial Salary: $70,140.47 (includes 5% King County Premium Pay)

Supervising Position: Director of Inclusion, Advocacy, and Community Programs
Essential Duties

Recruiting & Outreach
  • Partner with the outreach & marketing team to develop recruitment materials tailored to marginalized and underrepresented students
  • Liaison with community partners and maintain contact between staff and faculty mentors
  • Build community connections to secure the success of the Cascadia Scholars
  • Attend college recruitment fairs and other recruitment-oriented events to promote the Cascadia Scholars program and form connections with marginalized and underrepresented students

Retention & Mentoring
  • Welcome new marginalized and underrepresented students to Cascadia College and provide a new student orientation activity specifically for the group
  • Create a mentoring program for marginalized and underrepresented students. This includes program design, mentor selection and training, mentor/mentee matches, ongoing support and program assessment.
  • Celebrate graduating marginalized and underrepresented students and provide a graduation activity specifically for this group
  • Celebrate other milestones and accomplishments as they arise
  • Provide support, encouragement, and compassion to marginalized and underrepresented students and be a sounding board for them throughout their studies at Cascadia College

Programming & Planning
  • Implement events, activities, and programs for marginalized and underrepresented students attending Cascadia College to increase a sense of individual and group strength, belonging, and thriving.
  • Help to develop supportive pathways for marginalized and underrepresented students at Cascadia College to transfer into 4-year institutions and/or access the job market
  • Identify gaps and create other programs and partnerships to address the needs and requests of marginalized and underrepresented students
  • Track academic data and records (i.e. student grades) while working with guided pathways and other academic advisors to support student success
  • Collaborate with the planning, programming, logistics and execution of the Office of Inclusion, Advocacy, and Community events, including activities at the Inclusion, Advocacy, and Community Center.
  • Perform other administrative duties of a similar nature

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • One (1) year experience working with people of color or diverse communities, preferably within higher education
  • Effective experience with community outreach and partnership building, preferably both in and outside academic settings
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and the ability to support a diverse workplace and educational environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two (2) years relevant experience working with diverse communities, in contexts such as:
    • student mentorship
    • academic/personal coaching
    • program development
    • a combination of the above
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs that promote recruitment, retention and completion rates for traditionally underrepresented student populations
  • Experience using technology in the delivery of student recruitment, retention and support, including familiarity with Microsoft and google suites.
  • Strong analysis and understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to successfully communicate (written and orally) in a language in addition to English

Physical Work Environment

Semi-Sedentary Work: Involves staying in a stationary position to a significant degree. Jobs are sedentary if moving is required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

The College is currently in hybrid operations, with many assignments completed in an online environment during this time. Full-time employees are expected to be on-campus at least three (3) days per week with the option to work remotely for the remainder of their working days. Employees will need to provide their own remote workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. During on-campus operations, this position will perform work in a standard office setting, use standard office equipment and physically attend meetings both on and off campus and requires the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means.

Positions in this class typically require operating a computer, communicating, observing, and repetitive motions.

This position involves exerting between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects, with or without reasonable accommodation.
