Summary:

The Men's Head Rodeo Coach is responsible for overseeing all aspects of coaching the highly competitive men’s collegiate rodeo program; promoting and publicizing Athletics; and establishing and maintaining a network of local, regional, and national contacts supporting student recruitment and success.

This is a benefited, 10-month position.

Essential Duties

Coaching

  • Organize and conduct practice sessions; provide strategic and tactical direction of the team during rodeo situations; provide appropriate athletic training/injury prevention and equipment support for athletes.
  • Coordinate student rodeo athletes’ travel to the rodeos. Assist student rodeo athletes with emergency situations on the road.
  • Ensure that all athletes have signed the required forms, participation agreement, code of conduct, and have a NIRA membership to ensure proper health insurance coverage and eligibility to compete.
  • Provide program discipline as needed to ensure the program is functioning within the scope and goals of the Athletic programs regarding academic and conduct matters whether in the classroom, during participation, or in the community.
  • Pick up rough stock practice when needed.

Facilities & Livestock

  • Maintain the indoor training facility on the Casper College Ranch.
  • Secure practice facilities; locate and secure practice livestock, and transportation of livestock.

Recruiting

  • Recruit and retain student rodeo athletes who will represent Casper College well both academically and as a rodeo competitor.
  • Identify talent needs of program; evaluate and contact prospective athletes, parents/guardians, and reference persons; prepare and make an Athletic participation offer in accordance with NIRA rules; interact with high school and college coaches as needed to assist with athletes’ transitions into Casper College and into other intercollegiate programs
  • Provide a list to the Director of Financial Aid and Athletic Director of any and all scholarships offered to potential student athletes.

Budget Tracking

  • Administer and track, with the Athletic Director, the operational budget for the rodeo program; track scholarship and recruiting expenditure; develop, in conjunction with the Athletic Director, fund requests for rodeo sponsor assistance.

Academic Oversight

  • Monitor student athletes’ class attendance, provide academic advising for student athletes, track academic progress toward degree completion by student athletes; develop and implement an academic support system for athletes; provide academic eligibility and success information to the Athletic Department and Campus Administration as needed to comply with NIRA rules and state/federal legislative requirements.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours each week.

NIRA Compliance

  • Keep current on all National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) rules and regulations associated with the program, assuring that Casper College and student rodeo athletes are in compliance with grades and eligibility.

Collaboration

  • Maintain collaborative working relationships within the Athletic Department, administrative reporting lines, faculty and college support services; maintain collaborative working relationships with the rodeo sponsors; and maintain positive working relationships with media and community organizations.
  • Attend departmental/divisional meetings; and other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 2 years collegiate-level rodeo coaching experience, or 4 years of collegiate level or higher (professional) experience as a competitor
  • Valid motor vehicle license at the time of hire and must obtain a Wyoming driver’s license within 30 days of hire. Must maintain eligibility under the College’s insurance plan.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire
  • Knowledge of managing equine facilities, rodeo equipment, and livestock care
  • Ability to use office technology such as a computer, Microsoft Office Suite, and other productivity software
  • Ability to perform physical tasks associated with rodeo and equine activities
  • Ability to effectively coach a rodeo team and build positive relationships with students, faculty, and the community
  • Ability to comprehensively teach roping and rough stock riding skills
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and manage time effectively
  • Ability to work well both with a team and independently
  • Ability to travel extensively with the team


Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Casper College Athletics programs
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field from an accredited institution
  • 3 or more years of collegiate-level rodeo coaching experience, or 6 or more years of higher (professional) experience as a competitor

Supplemental Information

Work Environment:

Typical work environment is an office and athletics facility (rodeo arena) setting requiring normal safety precautions. This position will be exposed to rodeo livestock, dust, and associated hazards. Work is usually performed during the normal workday, however, early morning, late evening and weekend work is required; travel will be required. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings in various weather conditions.


Physical Demands:

Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. This position will be working and demonstrating with livestock and students in coaching/training situations, requiring extra precautions. Occasional lifting and carrying of objects up to 75 pounds; frequent lifting and carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighing 20-50 pounds.
