Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician/Technologist works to provide accurate, timely, and cost effective testing of patient samples to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The position is responsible for performing daily quality control, calibration, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with the laboratory’s quality management program. The position also aids in the development and maintenance of laboratory procedures and testing practices.

Essential Job Functions
-
Positively identifies all patients, samples, and substances collected for testing. Performs specimen processing in an accurate and timely manner.

Greets and assists patients with knowledge and skills necessary to provide excellent customer satisfaction. Performs phlebotomy procedure in accordance to protocol with an acceptable success rate.

Demonstrates ability to function in an accurate and precise manner in crisis and emergent situations. Prioritizes specimen processing as necessary according to patient/facility needs.

Performs a wide variety of Laboratory tests according to established procedures, maintaining specimen quality and producing accurate test results to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Evaluates necessary quality measures. Does not report patient results unless quality control data are within accepted parameters. Recognizes out of control values, takes corrective action, and notifies appropriate staff as applicable.

Assumes responsibility to resolve problems. Performs required preventative maintenance procedure in laboratory instrumentation. Investigates and resolves technical problems, referring to the appropriate resource when needed, and consults supervisor if resolution involves policy or procedure modification.

Performs clerical, cleaning, and other duties necessary for effective Laboratory operation.

Participates in the creation of a productive working environment, communicating effectively with other staff concerning patient processing needs. Maintains positive working relationships with medical staff and hospital personnel. Uses interpersonal skills to educate/support lab customers and promote the success of team members.

If certified, performs BAT/COC collections accurately according to protocol.

Participates in maintaining adequate inventory of supplies.
-
Contributes to the department quality maintenance and improvement efforts. Performs Section Head duties as assigned.

Takes responsibility in competency program documentation and strives to enhance job performance with continuing educational opportunities. Participates in the orientation and training of other staff members.
