SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Senior Financial Reporting Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Financial Reporting as well as the Senior Managers of Financial Reporting, primarily to assist in the preparation of the annual and quarterly combined financial reports (CFRs). The Senior Financial Reporting Accountant will be responsible for keeping current on SEC/U.S. GAAP and best practice industry financial reporting disclosures. This person will perform technical research and analysis regarding accounting and financial reporting questions received). The Senior Financial Reporting Accountant will help to ensure that there is a strong financial reporting control environment, including spreadsheet controls and records management. Working with the accounting managers/controller’s group, this person will be responsible for providing customer service to the personnel as needed. The person in this role may also periodically oversee other financial reporting staff, as assigned.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare supporting documentation for assigned sections of the annual and quarterly CFRs, including primary preparation responsibilities of core financial statements, footnotes, and MD&A disclosures
- Utilize the Financial Reporting System (FRS) and the Hub website to gather information for disclosure in the annual and quarterly CFRs, ensuring that the information gathered meets current SEC/U.S GAAP and best practice industry financial reporting disclosure requirements
- Update Excel files and/or Workiva using FRS data submissions and Excel template(s) provided to calculate combined disclosures for the quarterly and annual CFRs
- Track and maintain FRS/Excel template(s) submissions made to ensure version control so that the most current data are used for the preparation of the combined totals
- Review financial statement and disclosure information submitted (primarily from FRS and/or Excel templates) and follow up with the appropriate personnel for any unusual amounts or discrepancies between the financial statements and disclosure data
- Work to ensure that the pre-established and agreed-upon timeline for the distribution of the combining statements, draft report and publication of the quarterly and annual financial reports are met
- Work with the external auditors by providing assistance with their work on the annual audit and quarterly financial statement review
- Perform technical research and analysis regarding accounting and financial reporting questions received and provide assistance on accounting research projects with the Accounting Policy group and other special projects, as needed
- Assist with administration/development of FRS, Workiva/Wdesk, or other department improvements, as necessary
- Assist as needed in the department’s participation in the various Controller’s group subcommittees
- Provide customer service to personnel, as needed
- Perform other job duties as assigned
PRINCIPAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
- A minimum of five years relevant work experience
- Designation as a Certified Public Accountant (or CPA candidate) preferred
- Public accounting experience and/or relevant SEC experience required; banking/mortgage banking experience preferred
- Technical and research skills, including knowledge of U.S. GAAP, accounting and financial reporting issues, and SEC rules and regulations
- Proficiency with Excel, Adobe, and Wdesk (by Workiva)
- The ability to initiate and complete work assignments effectively and in a timely manner, with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
- The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of performance
- Self-motivated, customer service oriented, and a strong desire to learn
- Ability to influence various accounting personnel to reach consensus on various accounting policy and disclosure topics
