What are the responsibilities and job description for the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position at Catawba County Government?
Catawba County Public Health is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate person to fill the role of a Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC) Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. As a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you will serve as a role model, counselor, and support person for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Bilingual ability (Spanish-English) is preferred for this position. (Extra duty pay given for bilingual skills).
- Provides consultation, clinical aides, and emotional support to a caseload of prenatal and breastfeeding women and their families, including, but not limited to: educating them on the benefits of breastfeeding, assisting to overcome common barriers, and aiding women to get a good start with breastfeeding.
- Assists women and babies in learning breastfeeding techniques and obtaining and utilization of breastfeeding aids
- Provides counseling and assistance to women with common breastfeeding problems and concerns
- Refers women to WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert, nutritionist, lactation consultant, or Primary Care Provider as needed
- Assists mothers in implementing special plans for continuing breastfeeding in non-routine situations (i.e. minor illness, return to work/school, temporary mother-baby separation)
- Serves as a resource person to Public Health clients and WIC participants
- Assists with small group discussions providing breastfeeding information and support to prenatal and breastfeeding women
- Documents and maintains electronic records
- Provides outreach information about the WIC program
- Attends monthly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
- Continues education following agency-approved guidelines.
- High School graduation and 6 to 12 months of personal breastfeeding experience
- Completion of the FNS WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum Levels 1 and 2 and the Peer Counselor Care Plan Training within six months of employee’s hire date
