SUMMARY
Catholic Charities has an opening for the position of Refugee Youth Program Staff in its New Americans Department. This position is part-time, approximately 16-20 hours per week and is located at the Rutherford Pointe Apartments at 1 Rutherford Point Circle La Vergne, TN 37086. This position is seasonal, lasting from May 27th – July 31st. Hours typically fall between 3:00pm-7:00pm.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary functions of this position are to assist in implementation of the Refugee Youth Program (RYP). The program provides trauma education to children ranging from 5-14 years old through academic enrichment using the KidzLit and KidzMath curricula, and trauma-informed arts/recreation/enrichment opportunities. No transportation of program participants is required for this location.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists in program implementation, management, and evaluation of program activities and curriculum for the refugee youth program.
- Plans and implements daily activities for refugee youth in the afterschool program such as facilitating completion of homework assignments, engaging in recreational activities, etc.
- Monitors participant successes and struggles, helping them to problem solve when appropriate.
- Promotes the program within the community by responding to questions from parents or schools regarding program activities and requirements.
- Participates in twelve (12) hours of in-service training.
- Maintains accurate client/program records regarding services provided according to Agency guidelines, using the database(s) provided by the agency and within Agency time frame.
- Actively participates in supervision sessions, periodic team meetings, and training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- High school diploma or GED with 2 or more years of related experience OR associate degree, preferably in social work.
- Prior experience working with refugees and/or youth.
- Prior experience tutoring or teaching is desirable.
Additional Skills or Requirements
- Proficiency in one or more refugee language with a preference for Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Dari, Arabic, Burmese, Somali, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, or Kurdish.
- Knowledge of child behavior and development.
- Sufficient maturity for providing leadership to children.
- Trauma training certification or experience is desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Ability to facilitate intercultural communication and to create an inclusive environment.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public and staff.
- Ability to handle confidential information with extreme professionalism.
- Ability to plan and organize work, work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work well as a team and independently with minimal direction.
- Good knowledge of community resources as it relates to refugee youth.
- Certification in CPR with knowledge of basic first aid preferred.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to learn databases and other systems.
- Current driver’s license required. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle and provide own transportation
