DEFINITION:

Under general supervision of the Program Manager, the Emergency Preparedness Educator (EPE) provides outreach, community education, and plan and lead creative workshops to the community of Kern County on how to prepare for earthquakes, floods, threat of wildfires, and public health or medical/health disaster/emergency response to support the Listos California education initiative.
Candidates with strong communication and leadership skills are highly desired. This worksite will be located in Bakersfield.

The Catholic Charities Diocese of Fresno is a community benefit organization serving families who need food, clothing, housing, and other related support services.

SAMPLE OF DUTIES

No direct supervision of staff is exercised.

  • Plans, organizes, and conducts workshops and conferences to promote emergency preparedness awareness, risk reduction, and emergency preparedness measures.
  • Determines target populations and identifies specific educational needs by conducting statistical, demographic and socio-cultural surveys and assessments.
  • Plans and provides training in disaster education to community members, agency representatives, school personnel, etc.
  • Attends training sessions, meetings, conferences, etc., to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Assist clients in accessing appropriate services by identifying and reducing barriers.
  • Conducts focus groups on specific topics/needs assessment as necessary.
  • Under the direction of the Development Director, prepare brochures, flyers, posters and other materials for presentation to the public, community agencies, support groups, emergency management professionals, and elected officials; works closely with community members in promoting events and outreach activities.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
  • Performs general office work as required, including but not limited to leading the front desk reception area, answering telephone calls, and administrative duties such as but not limited to filing, faxing, etc.
  • Helps, as needed, in other Catholic Charities program departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education: High School graduate or its equivalent.Experience: Competency with basic computer skills.

License: A valid California Class “C” Driver License. Ability to use own transportation for work-related activities. Provide proof of insurance or be insurable.

Other Demonstrated ability to speak, read and write in Spanish and English fluently. Knowledge of vulnerable populations within Kern County.

Employees are also required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time, consistent with a typical business office operation and social services agency. Employees will also be required to drive an automobile to and from appointments, meetings, and events. Furthermore, employees are expected to operate a variety of business office equipment including personal computers, laptop computers, printers, photo-copy equipment, telephones, and audio-visual equipment. Also, employees may occasionally be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include depth perception, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
