Catskill Animal Sanctuary’s Buildings and Grounds team oversees the care and maintenance of our 115-acre property, its roads, barns, fencing, farm equipment, offices, buildings (including houses) and facilities. We seek a true “people person” – a skilled self-starter who enjoys physical work and wants to join a high-functioning staff working in support of our urgent mission.
Job Functions:
- Assist the Buildings and Grounds Manager in maintaining the facilities and grounds across all Sanctuary properties, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and the maintenance of fences, roads, and vehicles
- Complete routine fence checks to ensure no unnecessary injuries or escapes
- Assist with the productivity and safety of pastures through routine seeding, removal of nuisance plants, brush hogging, and inspection for rodent holes
- Assist with keeping all sanctuary vehicles in solid working order.
- Assist in maintaining roads, ditches, and culvert pipes: repair potholes, maintain condition and function of ditches and culverts by keeping them free of debris.
- Assist with humane pest control
- Keep garage and tool rooms organized and secure at all times
- Maintain Restroom Trailer, Porta Potty rentals and their 3rd party maintenance needs.
- Follow an evaluation checklist to ensure all buildings/systems are in good working order
- Assist with transport of animals when necessary
- Assist in cultivating a team environment and a “can do” attitude
Job Requirements:
- Proven experience in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, fencing, and maintenance of roads, grounds, and vehicles
- Be comfortable working around farmed animals including horses, cows and pigs
- Strong communications skills
- A willingness to work in all weather conditions
- Team player and self-starter who enjoys physical work
- 2 years’ experience in a similar role
- Solid work history
- Experience operating farm tractors and other heavy equipment
- Ability to establish and follow routine maintenance procedures coupled with flexibility to respond effectively to emergencies
- Ability to work independently and establish own work priorities

This position is a full-time, non- exempt position with generous paid-time off and benefits. The Buildings and Grounds Assistant will work a five day per week schedule with their primary location at Old Stage Rd and will sometimes be scheduled to assist at Rte. 32. Some holidays may be required in an emergency but are not an expectation of the position. Working a holiday as listed in the CAS Handbook will be compensated as such.
