Puckett Machinery Company is the Caterpillar® heavy equipment, rental services, and power systems dealer for central and southern Mississippi. As the industry leader in our territory with 15 locations, helping our customers succeed is our number one priority.

We are seeking Welder/Fabricators at Puckett MetalWorx, our custom metal fabrication company, located in Stringer MS.   We offer competitive compensation and benefits, specialized training, and a standard workweek schedule.

The Welder/Fabricator is responsible to perform heavy duty welding activities involved in the fabrication of custom machinery components.   Materials welded include ferrous and non-ferrous metals and the methods may include gas welding, shielded metal arc (stick-weld), Metallic Inert Gas (MIG) and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG).   This is an intermediate level skilled trade position working independently in a shop setting.  The position reports to the Welding/Fabrication Supervisor.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Functions: 

  • Interpret blueprints, specifications, diagrams, or schematics to determine appropriate welding process.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers to ensure proper assembly.
  • Prepare, weld, and fabricate metal structures and components using tools such as drill press, hydraulic press, chop saw, band saw and a variety of cutting and welding equipment such as TIG, MIG and Oxy-Acetylene torches.
  • Examine workpieces for defects and measure workpieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Correctly label all parts as per prescribed method.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory by keeping logs of materials and parts used and time worked.
  • Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assignments to address questions and concerns.
  • Maintain work area, tools, and equipment to promote a clean and safe environment.
  • Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
  • Keep up to date with developments in welding, tooling, technologies and systems.

Job Requirements:

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus at least 2 years advanced training, certification through accredited technical schools and/or specific work experience with gas, stick, MIG, and/or TIG welding required.
  • Minimum 2 to 4 years hands-on experience welding and fabricating experience. Demonstrated skill welding in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead).
  • Prior to assignment, ability to follow written instructions to successfully complete a comprehensive cut, fit, and fabrication test from a specified blueprint utilizing raw materials to finished product. This test will include layout, cutting, prepping, tacking, flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions, slag removal, and de-burring.
  • Within 90 days of assignment, successfully complete a 3G welding certification test.
  • Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, blueprints, specifications, and other related publications in standard and metric dimensions. Sufficient knowledge of geometry, arithmetic, metallurgy, structural design, heat effects and allowances for thickness of metal to project location of holes, cuts and bends.
  • Proficient in the use of tools and equipment used to fabricate components including, but not limited to: welding guns, torches, torch tips, hand shields, welding shields, and welding equipment, torque wrench, vernier calipers, micrometers, air compressors and air-powered tools. Must be familiar with rigging, torch cutting, grinder & wire wheel operation, leveling, and use of measuring devices and gauges.
  • Ability to safely use material handling equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 8 and 10 hours.
  • Good problem solving skills, detail oriented, and ability to work with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic fast paced service environment.
  • Ability to work standard five-day work schedule, including daily overtime, and occasional weekend hours as necessary.

Other Job Requirements:

  • Possess a complete set of basic hand tools and equipment including tape measure, cutting pliers, slag hammer, welding hood, welding gloves, cutting goggles, levels, punch, ruler, and tri- squares.
