Our client, a construction management company, is seeking a high-caliber, hands-on Controller to lead the financial operations of a growing operating company. This is a roll-up-your-sleeves role, responsible for owning the monthly close process, managing the day-to-day accounting function, and acting as a strategic partner to the P&L leader. Key responsibilities will include general accounting, payroll, financial reporting, budgeting, ad-hoc analysis and other related finance workstreams. Operating as a true utility player, this leader will be touching multiple areas of the business and have a hand in a wide range of responsibilities from tactical execution to strategic initiatives.
Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Lead and execute the monthly close process with accuracy and timeliness in accordance with GAAP
- Prepare and present P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements
- Maintain the general ledger, manage reconciliations, journal entries, and internal controls
- Manage AR, AP, payroll, and cash flow tracking
- Work with external accountants on tax and audit requirements
Operations Finance
- Partner with the Operating Company President to manage the P&L, margin performance, and cost control
- Develop and monitor KPIs, dashboards, and operational reporting
- Drive budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Support pricing, inventory, and capital spending decisions with data-driven insights
Business Leadership
- Hire, evaluate, and build a strong team over time to support financial operations, fostering a culture of continuous improvement
- Own the numbers — be the financial conscience of the business
- Identify opportunities to improve working capital, gross margin, and operating leverage
- Provide ad hoc analysis to support strategic initiatives and day-to-day decisions
- Create scalable processes as the business grows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
- 5-10 years of progressive experience in accounting and operations finance
- Strong background in construction required
- Strong grasp of cost accounting, gross margin analysis, and working capital management
- Highly proficient in Excel and financial systems (e.g., NetSuite or similar)
- Comfortable as a solo finance leader — doing the work and driving the strategy
- Detail-oriented but strategic — able to toggle between doer and advisor
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; trusted business partner mindset
- CPA preferred but not required
