Summary:
The Barge Crew Member is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a barge vessel, assisting with loading, unloading, securing cargo, and ensuring the maintenance of the barge and its equipment. This role requires adherence to safety protocols, working as part of a cohesive team, and being able to operate in various weather and water conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Loading and Unloading Cargo:
- Assist with the loading and unloading of materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Secure cargo properly using ropes, cables, or other securing mechanisms to prevent movement during transport.
General Barge Maintenance:
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of the barge, equipment, and tools.
- Clean and maintain decks and machinery areas to ensure safety and operational efficiency.
Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols and marine regulations during all operations.
- Assist in emergency procedures, including man overboard drills, fire drills, and other safety exercises.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and ensure others do the same.
Navigational Assistance:
- Support the barge captain with mooring, anchoring, and navigational duties as needed.
- Assist in securing the barge at ports or docking stations.
Communication:
- Maintain effective communication with the barge captain, fellow crew members, and port personnel to ensure smooth operations.
- Report any issues, incidents, or hazards immediately to the supervisor.
Equipment Operation:
- Operate barge equipment such as cranes, winches, or pumps under supervision.
- Conduct safety checks on machinery and equipment before and after use.
Environmental Protection:
- Follow environmental protection regulations to minimize the impact of operations on the surrounding environment, including safe disposal of waste and handling of hazardous materials.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience working on barges, ships, or in marine operations is preferred but not required.
- Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or equivalent maritime certification may be required.
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit to lift heavy objects, work in various weather conditions, and perform tasks involving climbing, bending, and manual labor.
- Work Environment: Must be comfortable working in confined spaces, on water, and during shifts that may include nights, weekends, or extended time away from home.
